Final Weeks: Disney World Closing Iconic 40-Year-Old EPCOT Restaurant September 8

There are plenty of Disney World restaurants where guests come primarily for the food. Then there are those where the surroundings become the real reason to make a reservation.

Coral Reef Restaurant certainly belongs in that second group.

For roughly 40 years, EPCOT guests have been able to sit beside enormous aquarium windows and watch marine life swim past while they eat. Soon, that experience will temporarily disappear.

Disney will close Coral Reef Restaurant beginning September 8, 2026. The closure isn’t permanent, but guests could be without the longtime EPCOT restaurant for an extended period because Disney hasn’t announced an exact reopening date.

One of EPCOT’s Longtime Restaurants Is Taking a Break

Coral Reef is located inside The Seas pavilion, but calling it an aquarium-themed restaurant doesn’t quite describe the experience.

Guests aren’t simply surrounded by decorations designed to look underwater.

They’re dining beside the real aquarium.

Large viewing windows give diners a look at marine animals moving through the water throughout their meal. Depending on what’s swimming by, guests can spot sea turtles, rays, tropical fish, sharks, and other animals.

That has helped Coral Reef remain distinctive even as Disney World has introduced increasingly elaborate restaurants elsewhere across the resort.

After decades of meals, however, the restaurant is about to take some time off.

Disney Hasn’t Said What’s Changing

September 8 is the date guests need to know.

Disney has confirmed Coral Reef will temporarily close that day and says it expects the restaurant to reopen later in 2026.

Beyond that, Disney hasn’t given guests much information.

We don’t know exactly what work is planned during the closure. Disney hasn’t announced a major reimagining, nor has it said the restaurant will receive a completely new concept.

Most importantly, there isn’t an exact reopening date.

That means guests visiting EPCOT later this year shouldn’t count on Coral Reef being available simply because their vacation happens several weeks after September 8.

Until Disney puts a return date on the calendar, you’ll need a backup plan.

Other EPCOT Restaurants Remain Available

Finding somewhere else to eat shouldn’t be difficult.

EPCOT remains one of the strongest dining parks at Walt Disney World, particularly for guests who enjoy making food part of their day rather than simply stopping for a quick meal.

World Showcase offers restaurants inspired by its 11 represented countries, while other parts of EPCOT provide options including Space 220, Garden Grill Restaurant, and Connections Eatery.

The problem is that none of those choices can recreate Coral Reef’s defining feature.

You can find another table-service reservation.

You can’t find another EPCOT restaurant with exactly the same aquarium view.

Disney World Has Several September Changes Coming

The timing of the Coral Reef closure is also worth remembering because September 8 will bring other changes to Walt Disney World.

Cool KIDS’ SUMMER ends September 8, and Disney hasn’t confirmed whether the offering will return next year.

Typhoon Lagoon also begins a seasonal closure that day, with Blizzard Beach remaining open.

Guests traveling around the beginning of September will therefore want to double-check their plans before arriving.

There’s Good News for Coral Reef Fans

Despite the closure, this isn’t supposed to mark the end of Coral Reef.

Disney expects the restaurant to reopen later in 2026.

That’s an important part of this story, particularly given Coral Reef’s long history.

The September shutdown is better viewed as a temporary interruption rather than a farewell to the EPCOT restaurant.

Exactly what Coral Reef looks like when it returns remains to be seen. Disney hasn’t shared enough information to know whether guests will notice significant changes.

For now, the biggest thing vacationers need to remember is the date.

Coral Reef Restaurant closes September 8.

If you’re visiting EPCOT before then, there’s still time to enjoy another meal beside the aquarium. If your trip falls after that date, you’ll need to choose another restaurant until Disney officially announces that this roughly 40-year-old EPCOT favorite is ready to welcome guests back.
