After nearly a decade since the indie horror hit It Follows graced our screens, the creepy, slow-walking nightmare is about to return in the highly anticipated sequel, They Follow. Originally debuting at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, It Follows was an unexpected horror sensation, grossing $23.3 million worldwide on a modest $1.3 million budget.
The film remains a standout in the horror genre, thanks to its unique premise, nerve-wracking suspense, and unforgettable soundtrack by Disasterpeace.
Now, with Maika Monroe set to reprise her role as Jay, fans are eager to dive back into the eerie world of It Follows. Here’s everything we know so far about the sequel, They Follow.
They Follow: Bigger, Darker, and Scarier
While plot details remain scarce, we do know They Follow will pick up 10 years after the original. Monroe told Collider in June that the sequel will be “bigger, darker, and more f*cked up” than the first film. So if you thought the looming, slow-moving terror from It Follows couldn’t get any worse, think again. Monroe’s excitement about the project is palpable. “The script is so f*cking good. I’m obsessed,” she later told IndieWire.
Even though we don’t have the exact plot yet, the title alone is very curious. Could this mean there’s more than one entity this time around? Will Jay have to contend with an army of invisible stalkers? While Monroe hasn’t given much away, her comment about it being “darker” leaves us imagining even more twisted scenarios than the original film.

Jay’s Return to It Follows 10 Years Later
In her interview with IndieWire, Monroe teased that stepping back into the role after so long is an exciting challenge, noting, “This is going to be my first time [doing a sequel]. It’s going to be such a new kind of adventure for me.”
With the original film leaving Jay’s future ambiguous, it will be interesting to see where her journey picks up. Has she found a way to outsmart the entity for good, or has it been haunting her this entire time? Monroe’s enthusiasm for the project and her confidence in director David Robert Mitchell’s vision are reassuring for fans craving a worthy continuation.
The Original It Follows Cast: Who’s Returning?
So far, the only confirmed cast member is Monroe, but fans are hoping to see familiar faces return. Jay’s friends, played by Keir Gilchrist (Paul), Olivia Luccardi (Yara), and Lili Sepe (Kelly), were crucial to her survival in the first film, and their fates are still up in the air.
Will the gang reunite to battle an even greater threat, or will Jay be facing this nightmare on her own?
When Can We Expect They Follow?
Unfortunately, They Follow is still in pre-production, and no official release date has been set. Director David Robert Mitchell is currently working on another project, Flowervale Street, which is expected to hit theaters in May 2025. Filming for They Follow is slated to begin after that, so fans may need to wait a bit longer before they can dive back into the world of creepy, slow-walking entities.
