Dollywood’s Largest Ride Investment No Longer Opening as Planned

It looks like Dollywood is making some major changes to its plans for 2026.

The Tennessee theme park appears to have quietly moved away from its planned spring debut for NightFlight Expedition, the new $50 million attraction billed as the largest ride investment in park history.

The project was first announced with a Spring 2026 opening target.

Dollywood’s official website previously stated that NightFlight Expedition was ā€œanticipated to open in Spring 2026,ā€ with additional wording promising guests the attraction would ā€œtake flight in Spring 2026.ā€

The page now lists only ā€œ2026.ā€

The change has fueled speculation among theme park fans that the attraction will open later than originally expected.

Dollywood Guests Question New Opening Timeline

NightFlight Expedition is being built inside Wildwood Grove, one of Dollywood’s most successful expansions in recent years. The attraction combines a family coaster, dark ride, and water ride into one indoor experience themed around the Smoky Mountains.

Dollywood has described the attraction as a first-of-its-kind adventure.

When it opens, riders will board custom amphibious vehicles traveling through glowing caverns, rapids, and nighttime wilderness scenes inspired by the Smokies.

Construction, however, appears to still be ongoing.

One X post comparing archived versions of the attraction page pointed out the missing ā€œSpringā€ wording and asked: ā€œLooks like Dollywood has removed the word ā€˜Spring’ from Nightflight Expedition’s page on their website. The screenshot on the left was from Friday, May 15 and on the right is from today. When do you think it will open?ā€

Guests visiting the park have also noticed a shift in messaging.

According to several recent visitors, train operators discussing the attraction are now telling guests to return ā€œlater this seasonā€ rather than ā€œlater this spring.ā€

Some fans believe the ride could still debut this summer.

ā€œSummer or early fall now seems like a more realistic timeframe for the ride completion,ā€ one Reddit user wrote. ā€œTo add, the final pieces of track were put into place over the last two days, with no more remaining track [lying] around the building.ā€

Others expect a longer delay.

ā€œI was there ten days ago, and I thought there was no way [NightFlight] would be ready anytime soon,ā€ another guest wrote. ā€œI’d say 3 months would be fast. I wouldn’t be surprised if it opens in late fall.ā€

A third guest suggested Dollywood should publicly acknowledge the delay.

ā€œThey should save themselves stress and just say ā€˜since this is the first of its kind, [there have] been setbacks and unexpected delays. We will try and vet this open by summer or fall,ā€™ā€ they wrote.

Dollywood Continues Expanding Beyond Roller Coasters

The apparent delay comes during a major growth period for Dollywood.

The theme park has expanded aggressively over the past decade, adding large-scale attractions, resorts, and themed areas as attendance continues to rise. Big Bear Mountain opened as Dollywood’s longest roller coaster, while the Dolly Parton Experience introduced new museum exhibits and interactive attractions centered on the singer’s career.

Dollywood has also continued performing strongly in industry rankings.

The park regularly places among the top parks in the Golden Ticket Awards and has repeatedly won Best Guest Experience. Wildwood Grove itself has also received industry recognition since opening.

Operational changes have continued elsewhere across the resort this season.

Dollywood’s Splash Country water park recently transitioned to a cashless system, with guests now required to use cards or mobile payments throughout the property.

NightFlight Expedition remains one of the resort’s most ambitious projects to date.

Dolly Parton previously praised the attraction during its announcement in 2025.

ā€œI’m just so proud that Dollywood has grown so much in its first 40 years that we’re able to add a ride like NightFlight Expedition,ā€ Parton said. ā€œI have no doubt it’s going to be a huge part of Dollywood’s next 40 years.ā€

She added: ā€œWe’re always trying to take the natural beauty of the Smokies and make it part of everything we’re doing in the park, and they’ve definitely been able to do it with this ride.ā€
