Doctor Doom Reveal: Villain Officially Welcomes MCU Fans to His Kingdom
Marvel Studios is gearing up for what may be its most consequential theatrical release in years with Avengers: Doomsday, a film designed to reset the direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe while pulling together nearly two decades of storytelling.

Scheduled to arrive in theaters in December 2026, Avengers: Doomsday will mark the fifth Avengers installment in the MCU. The road to this moment has been anything but straightforward. Originally announced under the title The Kang Dynasty, the film underwent a substantial creative overhaul following Marvel’s decision to move away from Kang the Conqueror and actor Jonathan Majors. In their place: a rebranded Doomsday subtitle and the unexpected return of Robert Downey Jr., now stepping into the role of Victor Von Doom.
The shift was formally revealed during San Diego Comic-Con 2024, where Marvel confirmed that Doomsday would position Doctor Doom as the saga’s central antagonist. Downey Jr.’s casting sent shockwaves through the fandom, given his defining run as Tony Stark/Iron Man beginning in 2008. While speculation has swirled that Doom could be a Stark Variant, Marvel has yet to confirm that theory.

Marvel appears to be aiming for scope on par with its previous crossover highs. With characters pulled from across Disney-era Marvel films as well as properties inherited from 20th Century Studios, including the X-Men, Avengers: Doomsday is being framed as a large-scale ensemble event reminiscent of Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019).
Helping reinforce that comparison is the return of Anthony and Joe Russo. The directing duo is back behind the camera for Doomsday and its follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, currently dated for December 2027. Whether that sequel expands into multiple films remains unclear. Plot details are similarly scarce, despite four teaser trailers released to date, though one prevailing rumor suggests Doctor Doom will be targeting Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers/Captain America.

According to fan theories, Rogers’ decision to remain in the past at the end of Endgame—where he reunited with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell)—may have triggered a Multiversal chain reaction. That incursion is said to have obliterated Doom’s homeland and family, setting him on a path of vengeance against Earth’s heroes.
If accurate, the confrontation will be massive. A 2025 livestream that quickly spread online revealed an expansive cast list. Veterans like Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier) are set to appear alongside newer additions such as Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic) and Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman). Some reports have already labeled Doomsday as Marvel Studios’ largest undertaking to date.

Outside the live-action slate, Marvel has begun spotlighting Doctor Doom in unexpected ways. A recent video posted to the official Marvel Entertainment YouTube channel added new texture to the character through the animated series Marvel Super Heroes: What The–?!, with Doom personally welcoming viewers to Latveria.
“Enjoy as Doctor Doom provides a guided tour of the festivities and history of his kingdom of Doomstadt, Latveria… SO COMMANDS DOOM!”
The episode may not directly tie into Avengers: Doomsday, but its timing is notable. Marvel’s decision to emphasize Doom and his homeland follows the character’s official MCU debut in the post-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025).
Marvel Super Heroes: What The—?! is a comedic animated shorts series that playfully parodies iconic moments and characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Presented in a stop-motion style using action figures, the show reimagines familiar heroes like Spider-Man, Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor in absurd, fast-paced scenarios that lean fully into slapstick humor and visual gags.

In the Doom-centric episode, the villain doubles as monarch and vacation promoter, pitching Doomstadt as a rare “superhero-free” destination. His sales tactics focus on relentless security, with Doombots hovering nearby as a reminder that privacy is not part of the package.
The tour escalates with glimpses of Latveria’s attractions, including Lake Doom, the amusement park Doomland, a comedy club, and the ominous Doomsday Festival. The tone darkens when Namor and the Talokan warriors abruptly appear, with Doom casually handing over tourists as prisoners, treating the hostile takeover as a routine itinerary change.

The episode ends on a chilling punchline: Doom advertises time-loop vacations that prevent guests from ever leaving. Marketed as an exclusive perk, the idea perfectly captures Doom’s blend of arrogance and menace.
Whether the short is a throwaway gag or a subtle hint at what’s to come, its release has reignited speculation around Doom’s role in the MCU. One thing is certain: Marvel is ensuring audiences are paying close attention as Avengers: Doomsday approaches.
