Fan Lament Disney Neglecting the Carousel of Progress After Bizarre Malfunction

Disney Parks fans are expressing growing concern after Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress suffered a strange malfunction that left Magic Kingdom Park guests stranded. Many feel the rotating theatrical attraction is being overlooked as technical problems mount.

The incident unfolded on June 2, when Redditor u/PlumAlone4599 shared their unsettling experience of being evacuated from the Carousel after the theater refused to rotate properly. The guest explained that Disney cast members were already aware of the problem before the show’s final scene had even ended. Guests were told to stay seated while the issue was assessed, but after repeated attempts to complete the rotation, everyone had to be evacuated.

“Before we even [knew] we had to leave the show,” the guest said, “they made an announcement instructing guests to remain seated for the entirety of the final scene.” They watched that scene one and a half times before the evacuation began.

Carousel of Progress holds a unique place in Disney theme park history. It originated at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, moved to Disneyland Park in 1967, and finally arrived at Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom Park in 1975. The show takes audiences through the 20th century, following the everyday life of an American family and the technological advances that shaped their world.

Despite its long legacy, the attraction hasn’t seen significant updates since a refresh in 1994. While some Disney Parks fans appreciate its nostalgic charm, others worry the ride is being neglected. This latest malfunction only fuels their fears.

“I get worried about Carousel,” said one fan, u/NaiRad1000. “It’s an old [attraction]. Even older than Magic Kingdom when you remeber they brought it over from Disneyland. I’m sure they just do the bare minimum to keep it running.”

A dog lies on the floor with a bone, while the kitchen is filled with retro appliances and decor. Another person is faintly visible in the background, possibly near a hidden Mickey.

“Carousel of Progress is consistently [plagued] with issues,” u/cricket_bacon agreed. “I hope they continue to keep it on life support – it is one of the attractions I always look forward to.”

A technician was on site promptly after the malfunction was reported, and the attraction reopened shortly after, operating normally at the time of this article’s publication. Yet, for many Disney Parks fans, the question remains: is this classic being left behind?
