Female Gorillas Removed From Disney World Enclosure Overnight
All female and juvenile gorillas disappeared from their habitat at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park on March 2, leaving only males visible to guests on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail.
Disney cast members stationed at the Africa habitat confirmed to visitors that the “full troop was not available,” according to WDWNT. The outlet posted an image on Facebook showing a male gorilla on display, noting the complete absence of females and younger animals.
Family Troop Separated
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park maintains two separate gorilla groups—a bachelor troop and a family troop—mirroring natural behavior where mature males form all-male groups before mating, while families stay together.

The family troop lost its 44-year-old leader, Gino, last September. He had lived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom since the park opened in 1998, fathering multiple offspring and becoming one of the first gorillas globally to permit cardiac ultrasounds without anesthesia.
No Official Explanation From Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t announced why females and juveniles were removed from the habitat or when they’ll return. Disney cast members on the scene provided no details beyond confirming the full troop wasn’t available for viewing.

Potential reasons for the overnight removal include veterinary procedures, breeding program adjustments, social restructuring, or standard rotations between public and backstage areas. The complete removal of all females and young gorillas simultaneously suggests coordinated management rather than individual animal care. However, Walt Disney World Resort has not confirmed this.
The Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail remains open to Disney Park guests, with only male gorillas visible. Follow Disney Dining for updates on this situation and other developments around Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park!
