Construction barriers have returned to EPCOT, but this isn’t another expansion or an exciting new attraction.
Instead, Walt Disney World is removing part of a relatively recent addition after years of technical problems left the company struggling to keep it operating properly.
The decision affects World Celebration, one of the centerpiece neighborhoods created during EPCOT’s transformation.
And while guests will still recognize the area’s overall design, one of its most distinctive nighttime features is officially on its way out.

EPCOT Area Closes as Disney Changes Course
Disney has been working inside World Celebration Gardens since August 2026, when large planters appeared around sections of the central courtyard.
The barriers prevented guests from entering areas where construction crews were preparing to remove portions of the pavement.
The project involves the illuminated ground lighting installed when World Celebration Gardens opened in December 2023.
Those lights were arranged in a giant EPCOT logo surrounding the courtyard’s central planter.
They were also designed to coordinate with Spaceship Earth’s nighttime lighting, creating a colorful display that connected the gardens with the park’s most recognizable landmark.
However, the feature experienced problems almost from the beginning.
Now, Disney is eliminating the troublesome lighting rather than continuing to repair it.
Disney’s New Replacement Is Already Appearing
Guests can already see the results of the ongoing project.
As of October 8, part of the courtyard that Disney previously blocked off has reopened.
Instead of illuminated strips, the pavement now contains decorative white concrete with small rocky flecks.
The concrete maintains the original EPCOT logo pattern, but it no longer produces the lighting effects that Disney initially envisioned.
Crews have also installed spacers in areas where the new concrete meets remaining plastic lighting covers, apparently to create a more even surface.
Meanwhile, another section of the gardens remains closed toward the western side of the courtyard.
Disney has not established a completion date in the available report.
Why Is Disney Abandoning the Lights?
The decision follows nearly three years of frustrating problems.
Shortly after the gardens opened, entire sections of the lighting system began going dark.
Other sections struggled to synchronize with Spaceship Earth’s illumination.
Eventually, the problems extended beyond the lights themselves.
Plastic covers installed over the illuminated strips began cracking and warping, creating uneven surfaces and potential tripping hazards.
Disney repeatedly closed affected areas and attempted repairs, even installing screws to keep some covers in place.
Unfortunately, those fixes failed to provide a lasting solution.
The situation is particularly disappointing because the illuminated pavement was supposed to honor a similar feature from EPCOT’s former Future World.
That older system used different technology and reportedly didn’t experience the same persistent problems.
For now, World Celebration Gardens remains open in accessible areas, but guests should expect construction restrictions while Disney completes the removal.
Although the company isn’t abandoning World Celebration itself, it is giving up on an original design element less than three years after introducing it.
And once the remaining lights disappear, EPCOT’s central courtyard will look noticeably different after dark.
