According to WDW News Today, one guest posted on Reddit about Disney unexpectedly canceling their September 6 reservation. That post’s been deleted since, but someone else apparently commented saying the exact same thing happened to them. Combine a same day closure with active cancellations, and you’ve got a much bigger mess than just a fully booked restaurant.
There’s Actual History Behind This Name
Steakhouse 71 isn’t one of Disney World’s original restaurants, but the name’s not random either. It opened back in 2021 during Walt Disney World’s 50th Anniversary celebration, taking over the spot where The Wave, of American Flavors, used to be inside the Contemporary Resort. That “71” in the name is a nod to 1971, the actual year Walt Disney World opened in Florida.
It’s also kind of the East Coast version of Steakhouse 55, which used to run at the Disneyland Hotel in California before shutting down for good. Unlike your typical steakhouse that’s really just a dinner spot, Steakhouse 71 covers breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner, all in one day. So a full day closure hits a lot more meal plans than just one dinner reservation.
One Bad Day, A Lot of Ruined Plans
Losing a dinner reservation sounds minor in the grand scheme of a Disney trip, but dining reservations are honestly the backbone of a lot of people’s whole itinerary. Tons of guests book their big meals weeks in advance, then build their park hours, transportation, Lightning Lanes, and resort downtime around those exact reservations.
That’s exactly why a same day cancellation stings so much, especially at the Contemporary. The hotel’s basically walking distance from Magic Kingdom and connects straight to the park via the Resort Monorail, so plenty of guests probably planned to just pop back over for a meal without going anywhere else. When that suddenly falls apart, finding another decent table service spot last minute isn’t easy, especially if you picked Steakhouse 71 for a specific reason, the menu, the price, the timing, whatever it was.
Meanwhile, There’s a Crane Parked at the Contemporary Now
This whole Steakhouse 71 situation is playing out right in the middle of a much bigger exterior renovation happening at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, one that’s been going on for over a year now. It kicked off back in September 2024 starting at Bay Lake Tower, then eventually moved over to the main Contemporary Tower building, where scrim and scaffolding have been covering parts of that iconic A-Frame shape.
Construction hit the Bay Lake side of the resort in early August, with scaffolding and dark green walls going up. Then on August 26, WDWNT reported a crane had shown up on the north side of the Contemporary as work on the A-Frame’s exterior kept going. Photos showed most of the fourth floor observation deck blocked off with rolling planters, probably a safety call since it’s sitting right under the crane’s arm. The crane’s parked in a service area on the north side, ringed by orange traffic cones.
Beige scrim and scaffolding are still covering the front of the building, though the fabric’s apparently shifted around a bit over time. Disney originally said this whole project would wrap in September 2025, then pushed it to July 2026, and now the official Contemporary Resort page says construction’s running through late 2027 instead.
Everything Else Is Still Running Normal, Don’t Worry
Despite all this construction, Disney’s confirmed the monorail, buses, pools, restaurants, and basically every other resort amenity are still fully available the whole time. If you’re staying at the Contemporary, just expect to see or hear construction stuff during the day, plus the occasional surprise like this Steakhouse 71 situation.
Watching to See If This Actually Sticks
Right now there’s nothing pointing to Steakhouse 71 heading into some longer refurbishment or shutting down for good, separate from all the exterior work happening around it. Disney’s own calendar already showing it back open with reservations available is a solid sign this really was just a quick maintenance thing, not the start of something bigger.
