Disney World Removes Current Galactic Hero Rules on Buzz Lightyear Ride at Magic Kingdom
Magic Kingdom is in the middle of a sweeping evolution at Walt Disney World Resort, and one of Tomorrowland’s most recognizable attractions is nearly ready to make its return.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is preparing to reopen, and new footage from inside the attraction points to a much more extensive overhaul than many fans may have expected. Rather than a light refresh, Disney appears to be modernizing the ride with updated technology and enhanced interactivity as part of its wider investment plans for 2025 and 2026.
From the moment guests step into their Star Cruisers, the changes are immediately noticeable. One of the most talked-about upgrades is the redesigned blaster system. Previously fixed in place, the blasters can now be removed and aimed freely, allowing for a more precise and engaging experience. Combined with refreshed lighting effects, updated targets, and improved onboard scoring displays, the attraction now leans further into a game-like format that feels more in step with today’s expectations.
The updates don’t stop at gameplay. Disney has also reworked elements of the attraction’s storyline. New scenes have been added, along with the introduction of an animatronic character named Buddy. This new figure helps guide guests through a training sequence before they set off to face Emperor Zurg, giving the experience a clearer sense of progression while keeping the original premise intact.
Ahead of its official reopening, Disney is offering cast members a chance to preview the attraction. These sessions, scheduled in the days leading up to the April 8 debut, allow employees to experience the ride early while also giving Disney an opportunity to fine-tune operations.
Running between March 21 and March 27, the preview period will see cast members cycle through the attraction as teams evaluate ride timing, guest flow, and the performance of newly installed systems, including the updated blasters and scoring features. This step is a standard part of Disney’s process and helps ensure everything is ready before welcoming the public.
A subtle but important change has also been made to the ride’s scoring system—one that longtime fans may not expect.
According to a new report, achieving the coveted “Galactic Hero” status is no longer as simple as reaching the previous maximum score of 999,999 points. Instead, guests must now surpass 1,000,000 points to earn the title. Additionally, the score cap has effectively been removed, allowing players to continue racking up points beyond the old limit.
This adjustment raises the challenge level for competitive riders hoping to top the leaderboard.

0-1,000: Star Flyer
1,001-10,000: Solar Navigator
10,001-100,000: Astro Aviator
100,001-300,000: Planetary Pilot

+1,000,000: Galactic Hero
While cast member previews are underway, there is always the possibility of an early opening. Disney has a history of quietly allowing guests onto attractions ahead of their official debut if testing goes smoothly.
For some visitors, that means a chance to experience the ride before April 8. For others who have planned their trips around the reopening date, it could make the debut feel less like a single moment and more like a gradual rollout.
