Disney World Finally Addresses Major Complaint About New ‘Zootopia’ Attraction

Disney World has updated its new Zootopia attraction after guests complained that its story lacked context.

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! opened inside the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom on November 7, 2025. It replaced It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, which had operated at the park for more than 25 years.

The 4D show follows Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and other characters as they celebrate Zoogether Day. The presentation moves between several of Zootopia’s different biomes, introducing numerous characters and locations along the way.

However, the attraction received a mixed response after opening. Some guests found its story difficult to follow, while others said it moved too quickly and did not provide enough explanation before the main show began.

Disney has now added a new pre-show sequence designed to address that criticism.

Mayor Winddancer Joins the Pre-Show

Mayor Brian Winddancer now welcomes guests before they enter the Tree of Life Theater.

The character introduces Zoogether Day and provides additional context for the main presentation. He played a significant role in Zootopia 2, giving the attraction a stronger connection to the animated sequel.

Warburton returned to voice the character for the new scene. He is also well known to Disney World guests as the host of Soarin’ at EPCOT, including its current iteration, Soarin’ Across America.

Animators and filmmakers from Walt Disney Animation Studios worked with Walt Disney Imagineering’s story team to create the sequence.

Disney tested the update during overnight rehearsals inside the theater. Audio, lighting, special effects, and figure animation teams worked together to make sure the new introduction fit with the existing show.

The main attraction remains largely unchanged. Judy Hopps, Nick Wilde, and the rest of the cast still take guests through the Zoogether Day celebrations.

The new scene instead focuses on explaining the event before the main presentation begins. It gives guests more information about what they are about to watch and why the characters have gathered.

The Attraction Faced Complaints After Opening

Zootopia: Better Zoogether! was already under pressure before it debuted.

Many longtime Animal Kingdom fans were disappointed by the closure of It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, which had been part of the park since its opening year.

Others questioned whether Zootopia was a suitable fit for the Tree of Life. Although the franchise centers on animals, its stories take place in a large modern city rather than a natural environment.

The finished attraction also attracted criticism for its pacing. The show moves through multiple biomes and introduces several characters within a short period.

Some guests said the result felt rushed. Others believed the presentation relied too heavily on its screen-based animation and did not make enough use of the physical effects traditionally associated with a 4D attraction.

That led to comparisons with It’s Tough to Be a Bug!, which featured Audio-Animatronics, physical scenery, water effects, air blasts, and other surprises throughout the theater.

The new Mayor Winddancer sequence does not address every complaint. It does not substantially change the main show or add a large number of new effects.

However, it directly responds to concerns that guests were entering the theater without enough information about the story.

Initial reactions to the update have been positive.

Disney says “Zootopia: Better Zoogether” at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is getting an update starting today, including Patrick Warburton reprising his role as Mayor Winddancer from ‘ZOOTOPIA 2.’

“Very good sign that they are actually taking into account guest feedback again,” wrote one X user.

Another said, “We’re going down for a quick weekend trip next month and I was already looking forward to this, and now I’m even more excited!”

Disney frequently updates its theme park attractions after they open, particularly when changes can improve pacing or make a story clearer.

In this case, the company has acted less than a year after Zootopia: Better Zoogether! debuted. The addition gives the attraction a clearer beginning without requiring Disney to replace the main presentation.

A third Zootopia film is in the works, which means we could likely see even more of the IP at Disney’s theme parks. There is also currently also a Zootopia land at Shanghai Disneyland.
