Disney World Unexpectedly Demolishes Paid Lightning Lane Entrances at Magic Kingdom
Walt Disney World Resort built new Lightning Lane touchpoints at Magic Kingdom Park this week…then tore them right back down, all without saying a word about either decision.
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is less than two weeks from its May 3 official reopening, and the Frontierland roller coaster’s final stretch of preparation has been visible to Magic Kingdom Park guests watching from outside the construction zone. Track replacement is complete, new trains are running test laps, and crews have been putting finishing touches on the queue and repaving near the entrance.
Earlier this month, Lightning Lane tappoints — the scanning hardware guests use to access the express queue with a Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Lightning Lane Premier Pass purchase — appeared at the attraction’s entrance. Their presence made sense as an opening-day preparation step. Then, as BlogMickey reported Monday, the touchpoints were removed just as swiftly as they arrived. This photo from the outlet shows the area where the tappoints had been installed, now stripped of all the hardware.

No explanation accompanied either the installation or the removal. That kind of mid-construction adjustment is routine at Walt Disney World Resort, and the Lightning Lane entrances are expected to be back in place before the first guests board the renovated coaster on May 3.
The Ride They’re Coming Back For

The tappoint shuffle is a minor footnote against the backdrop of what Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is delivering when it returns. The Frontierland roller coaster closed in January 2025 for the most sweeping overhaul in its history, and the results go well beyond a retracked ride.
The most dramatic addition is the Rainbow Caverns sequence: a new scene in which the mountain begins to physically fight back against the mining operations disturbing its depths. Guests will pass through a cavern alive with audio-animatronic bats, shimmering stalagmites, and phosphorescent pools as the mountain grumbles beneath them. Freshly painted new trains will carry riders through the experience on an entirely replaced steel track.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad officially reopens at Magic Kingdom Park on May 3, 2026.
