What looked like a resolved situation at the Haunted Mansion last week has taken one more unexpected turn. The update Walt Disney World Resort quietly made on August 5 appears to settle, at least for now, the question of what the resort plans to do with one of its most debated attractions.
A Quick Recap of a Chaotic Two Weeks
The story began on July 24, when guests arriving at Magic Kingdom Park discovered the hanging corpse was no longer visible in one of the Haunted Mansion’s two Stretching Room pre-show areas. Many Disney Parks fans assumed Walt Disney World Resort had quietly made the cultural sensitivity update that Imagineers had been openly discussing for years, removing the suicide scene from the Liberty Square attraction amid its ongoing exterior refurbishment.
Walt Disney World Resort addressed the situation unusually quickly. Within 24 hours, the Central Florida vacation destination explained that the corpse had never been removed. Instead, the scrim used to conceal the hanging doll during most of the Stretching Room sequence had accumulated enough dirt and debris, possibly from nearby construction activity, that the figure had simply become invisible through the fabric.
By July 27, the scrim had been cleaned, and the hanging corpse was visible again. Most Disney Park guests assumed that was the end of the story…until now.
What Happened on August 5
WDWNT reported on Wednesday that Walt Disney World Resort had made another change to the affected left Stretching Room — this time replacing the scrim entirely rather than simply cleaning it again.
Even after the July 27 cleaning, the scrim retained visible staining from years of accumulated dust and debris. The replacement fabric features shading around the Stretching Room’s triangular ceiling patterns to maintain the Haunted Mansion’s signature aged atmosphere, but without the real-world wear and discoloration of the original.
The lighting in the left Stretching Room has also been adjusted — the hanging corpse is now more visible than before as it swings above guests during the pre-show. The scrim in the right Stretching Room, which never became dirty enough to obscure the figure, has not been replaced.
What This Means for the Future of the Scene
The question of whether the Haunted Mansion’s hanging corpse would ever be permanently removed has circulated inside Disney for years. During a 2021 Disneyland Resort refurbishment, Walt Disney Imagineer Michele Hobbs acknowledged the conversation directly: “It’s been discussed for sure. It’s definitely something that we’re thinking about.”
Another Imagineer, Kim Irvine, offered a similarly ambiguous response during a 2024 Disneyland Park refurbishment: “We’re still looking at that. That one is complicated, structurally… One thing at a time.”
More recent insider reports have suggested Disney is no longer actively pursuing the removal. The decision to replace and improve the scrim — and to adjust the lighting to make the figure more prominent — points in the same direction. Walt Disney World Resort isn’t removing the hanging corpse; it’s making it more visible.
