Disney World Coaster Malfunctions Mid-Ride, Guests Sent Rolling Backward

Walt Disney World Resort’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is known for being the first-ever reverse launch coaster at any Disney park. However, some riders recently discovered what it was like to go backward on the wrong part of the EPCOT ride.

More than two and a half years after opening, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind remains one of the most popular attractions at Walt Disney World Resort. It still requires a Virtual Queue or paid Lightning Lane reservation to ride, and slots fill up in seconds.

The ride has recently experienced extensive technical issues. Earlier this week, only half of the ride was operational. On Wednesday, EPCOT opened without Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, and the attraction remained closed for hours. Water damage has also been reported in the ride building.

Amid the ongoing chaos surrounding the World Discovery ride, TikToker @kaylalittle56 experienced an unusual malfunction while on board. The Walt Disney World Resort guest shared this video of herself on the attraction when it suddenly stopped working, sending guests rolling backward:

“We just got off Guardians, and the craziest thing just happened,” the Disney Park guest began. “On our first launch out, we went up, and it all of a sudden rolled back. It’s called a ‘roll back’ on coasters. We rolled all the way back into the launch station and we were stuck there for like five minutes.”

When Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind relaunched, there was no sound–typically, riders on the Walt Disney World Resort coaster hear one of six songs: “Conga” by Miami Sound Machine, ” “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire, “Disco Inferno” by The Trammps, “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” by Tears For Fears, “One Way Or Another” by Blondie, or “I Ran (So Far Away)” by A Flock Of Seagulls.

The guest shared a full video of their experience “rolling back” and re-riding a silent version of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. Disney cast members gave all guests on board a free Lightning Lane to return and experience the coaster with sound.
