Disney World Guests Lose Access to Another Area as Major Closures Pile Up

What This Could Mean for Your Upcoming Vacation Plans Through 2028

Walt Disney World Resort is heading into another busy holiday season with several attractions unavailable, hotel renovations underway, and more scheduled closures approaching. Now, part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom has joined the growing list.

The southern portion of Discovery River Amphitheater has been blocked off ahead of Santa’s Holiday Grove, removing access to part of a waterfront seating area near the park’s Tropical Americas construction project.

The restriction is relatively small compared with other Disney World closures. However, it arrives while Magic Kingdom has two attractions offline, a water park is undergoing refurbishment, and several Disney Resort hotels are preparing for projects extending into 2027 and 2028.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Closes Part of Discovery River Amphitheater

Guests visiting Disney’s Animal Kingdom will find restricted access to the southern seating section of Discovery River Amphitheater, located across from Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!

Rolling planters have been placed across entrances to that section as preparations continue for Santa’s Holiday Grove. The northeastern seating area near Expedition Everest remains accessible.

Although the amphitheater is not currently hosting a regular entertainment production, the affected section has served as a place for guests to sit along Discovery River. Its waterfront location also provides views toward construction on Tropical Americas, the new land replacing DinoLand U.S.A.

The change comes just ahead of Disney World’s holiday celebrations.

According to the Disney Parks Blog’s 2026 holiday announcement, Santa’s Holiday Grove will bring Santa Claus and intermittent snow flurries to the area near Theater in the Wild.

Inside the Magic previously covered Disney’s plans to relocate Santa’s Animal Kingdom experience, following the closure of DinoLand U.S.A.

Disney’s holiday food guide lists offerings at the new location beginning November 13. An official reopening date for the restricted amphitheater seating has not been established.

Two Magic Kingdom Attractions Remain Closed for Refurbishment

Elsewhere at Walt Disney World, guests are already encountering more substantial changes.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure temporarily closed on November 2 for routine refurbishment. Disney’s official attraction page currently identifies December 2026 as the expected reopening period.

The closure removes one of Frontierland’s major rides from the lineup during November and part of December. Inside the Magic has previously examined the attraction’s refurbishment schedule and anticipated return.

Meanwhile, Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has been unavailable since July 6, 2026.

The classic Tomorrowland attraction is undergoing an extensive update, with Disney expecting it to reopen in late spring 2027.

That extended absence means visitors will miss the show throughout the upcoming holiday season. Inside the Magic has also reported on the Carousel of Progress reopening window.

Both closures are temporary, but their schedules demonstrate how different the Magic Kingdom attraction lineup may look depending on when guests arrive.

Disney World Water Park and Resort Closures Continue

The refurbishment schedule extends beyond Magic Kingdom.

Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is currently closed for seasonal refurbishment. Disney’s official operating information identifies January 27, 2027, as its scheduled reopening date, with Blizzard Beach remaining available in the meantime.

Hotel guests also have several projects to consider.

At Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and BoardWalk Villas, the Luna Park Pool, Luna Park Crazy Play Area, and Leaping Horse Libations are scheduled to close from January 11 through April 2027.

Disney says the property’s leisure pools will remain available during the work.

Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside is undergoing phased guest room refurbishments through August 2027. Animal Kingdom Lodge is also experiencing construction and refurbishment activity.

These projects form part of a broader hotel renovation schedule. Inside the Magic has previously detailed additional Disney World hotel construction projects, including work affecting other resort properties.

The disruptions won’t necessarily affect every guest staying at these hotels. Their significance depends on the building, facility, and dates involved.

Disney Skyliner Will Shut Down for Seven Days in 2027

Another major change arrives in January.

Disney has scheduled a complete Disney Skyliner refurbishment closure from January 24 through January 30, 2027.

The gondola transportation system connects Disney’s Hollywood Studios and EPCOT’s International Gateway with several hotels, including Pop Century, Art of Animation, Caribbean Beach, and Riviera Resort.

According to Disney’s official Skyliner information, complimentary bus transportation will be available while the system is offline.

That distinction matters for guests who select a hotel partly because of its Skyliner access.

Visitors staying during the maintenance period should expect to use alternative transportation rather than the gondolas for their trips to the parks.

Disney Resort Renovations Will Continue Into 2028

Some of Walt Disney World’s scheduled work extends well beyond the upcoming holiday season.

Disney’s Wilderness Lodge has additional refurbishment phases planned for 2027 and 2028, including guest room work and the planned temporary closure of Copper Creek Springs Pool.

Disney’s Art of Animation Resort also has a longer-term guest room renovation schedule extending into 2028, according to the supplied refurbishment information.

Inside the Magic recently examined the Wilderness Lodge refurbishment timeline through 2028, including the potential effects on future hotel stays.

Taken together, the projects cover attraction experiences, transportation, hotel rooms, recreation, and guest seating areas.

They are separate maintenance, redevelopment, and seasonal projects—not evidence of a coordinated shutdown of Walt Disney World.

For anyone planning a trip, the important question is which facilities will be unavailable during their specific travel dates.

Guests should review Disney’s official attraction calendars, hotel refurbishment notices, and transportation updates before finalizing their plans, particularly when a specific ride, pool, or transportation service is central to their vacation.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
