Disney World Closes Beloved Boat Route, Resort Guests Told to Find Another Way
Boat service between Disney’s Old Key West Resort and Disney Springs has stopped.
The Sassagoula River Cruise route is closed through November 1, per Disney’s calendar.
The Old Key West dock is closed, boats are not running from there, and a sign at the dock directs guests to bus service instead.
Complimentary buses are being provided.
Get the Name Right
It is the Sassagoula River Cruise. Not a Mississippi River cruise.
Sassagoula is Disney’s invented name for the waterway in this part of the resort, created to support the Louisiana theming at Port Orleans French Quarter and Riverside. It is the name on the signage and the calendar, and it is the term that will actually find information about this closure.
Why This Hits Harder Than a Normal Closure
Old Key West is a Disney Vacation Club resort. One of the originals.
DVC guests are not flexible bookers. They used points for a specific resort, often reserved far in advance, frequently in a unit size that cannot be easily swapped.
So when transportation at your home resort goes away, you do not rebook somewhere else. You absorb it.
The closure lands on exactly the guests with the fewest options.
The Boat Was Never About the View
Here is the operational part.
Old Key West is sprawling, spread across a large footprint with multiple internal bus stops. That is a different situation from a compact resort where everybody boards in one place.
With the boat running, guests walk to the dock and go straight to Disney Springs. One leg. No internal stops.
Without it, guests board a bus that may work through the resort’s own stops before leaving.
That is why the boat was often faster, not just prettier. The advantage was skipping the pickup geography, and losing it adds time that a closure notice does not reflect.
The Walking Path Exists. Rule It Out.
There is a path between Old Key West and Disney Springs.
It takes about 45 minutes. There is no shade along it.
In Central Florida in October, that is a long stretch in direct sun, and it is not realistic for families with small kids, anyone with mobility considerations, or anyone hauling Disney Springs bags back.
The sign at the dock has the right answer. Take the bus.
What to Adjust
Leave earlier. Especially in the evening, when Disney Springs empties and bus demand climbs.
Watch your dining reservations. The boat ran on a predictable cadence. A bus working an internal circuit does not. Pad the timing.
Rideshare one leg if needed. Old Key West to Disney Springs is a short drive and cheaper than losing a table.
Do not plan around the walk. It is technically available. It is not a solution.
When It Returns
Listed as closed through November 1.
That timing puts the reopening right at the holiday ramp. Jingle Cruise returns November 3. Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party starts November 8. Disney Springs traffic builds through the month.
So the boat should be back before the busiest Disney Springs stretch of the year, which is likely deliberate.
Calendar dates can shift. Verify in My Disney Experience before building plans around the reopening.
The Accumulation Is the Real Story
One boat route down for two and a half weeks is not a crisis.
The volume is what matters. The Walt Disney World Railroad is in refurbishment. This boat route is down. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure closes November 2. Seven construction permits were filed for Disney Springs in one week. The Skyliner already has a January 2027 closure scheduled.
Each is routine maintenance on a resort with enormous infrastructure.
Together, they mean anyone arriving in the next few weeks has a real chance of finding something they planned around is not operating, with almost no way to know ahead unless they follow closure news closely.
