One of EPCOT’s most detailed buildings has been stripped down to its foundations overhead.
The Germany Pavilion is designed to look permanent. Its clock tower, village square, decorative storefronts, and steep rooftops have formed part of World Showcase since the park opened on October 1, 1982.
Behind that carefully maintained appearance, however, the buildings require the same repairs as any other structure exposed to Florida’s heat, humidity, and storms.
That reality is now clearly visible at Das Kaufhaus.
Major Roof Work Changes the Germany Pavilion Skyline
Disney crews are removing and rebuilding the roof of Das Kaufhaus, the large merchandise store located near the entrance to the Germany Pavilion.
The project has left much of the building’s distinctive roof exposed. Its red and burgundy shingles are disappearing across several steep slopes, revealing underlayment, seams, and fasteners underneath.
Work is taking place on both sides of the structure, but the two sections currently look very different.
On the west side, which faces toward the Italy Pavilion, some of the original shingles remain. Other sections have already been stripped, leaving dark underlayment visible between the remaining patterned areas.
Several dormers and lower roof slopes are still partially covered. This gives the building a divided appearance, with finished sections sitting alongside areas that have been opened for repair.
The east side is further into the process.
Most of the shingles have been removed from the main roof slope and the smaller dormers. Brown underlayment now covers much of the surface, interrupted by taped joints and exposed construction materials.
A small area of dark replacement shingles has appeared on one dormer. That suggests crews have started rebuilding certain sections while removal work continues elsewhere.
Disney has not announced a completion date for the Das Kaufhaus refurbishment.
The store remains open during the work. Guests can continue entering the building and browsing its merchandise while the roof project takes place above them.
The building’s complicated design makes the refurbishment particularly noticeable. Its roof contains multiple sharp angles, rows of dormer windows, decorative chimneys, and several separate slopes overlooking the World Showcase promenade.
It is a much more visible project than a standard repainting or minor repair.
The Real History Behind Das Kaufhaus
Das Kaufhaus is inspired by the Historisches Kaufhaus in Freiburg, Germany.
The original Historical Merchants’ Hall stands in Freiburg’s Münsterplatz. Its commercial history stretches back to the 14th century, while the building seen today was constructed in 1520.
EPCOT’s version is not a direct copy. Disney Imagineers adapted elements from the Freiburg landmark and combined them with details inspired by other German towns and architectural periods.
That approach is used throughout the pavilion.
The Germany Pavilion was largely inspired by Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a preserved medieval town in Bavaria. Its EPCOT counterpart presents a condensed version of Germany, combining regional influences into one walkable village square.
A replica of Rothenburg’s St. George and the Dragon statue stands at the center of the plaza. Nearby buildings feature painted façades, ornate signs, balconies, and a clock tower with a glockenspiel.
Das Kaufhaus originally operated under a different name.
The building was once known as the Gild Hall and contained Der Bücherwurm, a store selling German books and artwork. It became Das Kaufhaus in 1999, with its merchandise changing over time.
The latest roof work follows several other refurbishment projects in the Germany Pavilion.
Der Teddybär recently reopened after a temporary closure. The shop once again sells toys and Steiff bears, while the pavilion’s Kidcot activity station has moved inside near the registers.
Work has also affected locations including Volkskunst, Stein Haus, and the pavilion restrooms. Das Kaufhaus remained open while neighboring areas were temporarily unavailable.
Germany does not contain a major theme park ride. Instead, the pavilion is built around architecture, restaurants, entertainment, and retail.
Biergarten Restaurant has served guests since EPCOT’s opening day. Its interior recreates a nighttime Bavarian festival, complete with shared tables, German food, and live musicians.
Karamell-Küche is another major draw. The shop sells desserts and snacks prepared with Werther’s Original caramel, including caramel apples, popcorn, cookies, and other treats.
Similar roof work has previously taken place elsewhere in World Showcase.
Disney replaced wooden shingles and underlayment at the Norway Pavilion’s Stave Church Gallery in 2024. The gallery remained accessible while crews repaired the exterior.
At Das Kaufhaus, the exposed roof currently provides a rare view of what lies beneath EPCOT’s elaborate themed architecture.
Once the new shingles are installed, the building will likely return to blending into the Germany Pavilion skyline. For now, Disney’s work has transformed one of World Showcase’s most recognizable structures.
