Disney Just Pulled a Princess from Fantasyland—And Fans Are Divided

In a recent character reshuffling at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Princess Elena of Avalor has reportedly said her farewells to Fantasyland’s iconic Princess Fairytale Hall. The news, first reported by DVC Shop, marks a notable change for one of the resort’s more unique Disney Princesses, as Elena prepares to greet guests in a new location on Main Street, U.S.A.

While Disney has yet to issue an official statement, Cast Members and insiders are confirming that this move is likely permanent—and for longtime fans of Elena of Avalor, it may come as a bittersweet update.

On Instagram, DVC Shop Official shared, “🚨MAGIC KINGDOM UPDATE🚨

A Popular Royal Destination

Princess Fairytale Hall is among the most beloved character locations in all of Magic Kingdom. Nestled just behind Cinderella Castle, it’s the go-to spot for fans of classic Disney royalty. Depending on the time of day, guests can usually meet two of the following: Cinderella, Rapunzel, Princess Tiana, Snow White, or occasionally Belle.

Elena had quietly held her spot there for several years, offering representation as Disney’s first Latina princess, but with the demand for headline royalty—think those tied to blockbuster films or major merchandise lines—her time inside Fairytale Hall was always an uphill climb.

Lines for Fairytale Hall frequently hit the 60-minute mark or higher, especially during peak travel seasons. With families often prioritizing marquee names, it’s likely that Disney re-evaluated who would best meet expectations for that coveted Fantasyland slot.

Princess Elena debuted in 2016 in the Disney Channel animated series Elena of Avalor, a culturally rich story that mixed Latin folklore, music, and mythology. Over the course of three seasons, Elena went from magical teenager to ruling monarch, growing into a confident leader with a fierce sense of justice and compassion.

Despite being a groundbreaking character—particularly for Latin American Disney fans—Elena never made the leap into the official Disney Princess lineup. That distinction has long been reserved for characters featured in theatrical films. And as her show wrapped up in 2020, her presence in the parks has gradually diminished in priority compared to others.

According to reports, Elena’s new meet-and-greet spot will be located along Main Street, U.S.A., potentially giving her more spontaneous interactions with guests outside the structured format of Princess Fairytale Hall. This may also allow more flexibility in her appearances during special events or seasonal celebrations.

Guest Feedback May Have Played a Role

Character lineups at Walt Disney World are anything but static. They shift in response to guest preferences, merchandise trends, and media visibility. With Elena’s television series no longer running and her filmography limited, her appeal—while meaningful to a specific group of fans—doesn’t necessarily draw the crowds of princesses like Tiana or Rapunzel.

It’s not uncommon for Disney to monitor which characters see the longest waits or garner the most interest, especially in a high-traffic area like Fairytale Hall. This move might signal that feedback has nudged the company to re-prioritize the most in-demand characters in this location.

What This Means for Fans

If Princess Elena was a must-see for your family, don’t panic—she hasn’t disappeared entirely. Her new presence on Main Street could mean more relaxed, shorter interactions without the long line commitment. And while she’s no longer inside the storybook setting of Fairytale Hall, she’ll still be available for autographs, photos, and smiles.

It’s always possible Elena could return for special events, cultural celebrations, or even one-day-only appearances like those during Hispanic Heritage Month. For now, though, she’s moving to a new royal post—one a little closer to the entrance, but hopefully still filled with magic.
