Disney Park Guests Locked on Monorail for Over Three Hours

Disney Parks fans just got a surprise Monorail experience, and this time, it didn’t involve an evacuation. To celebrate “National Monorail Day”—a holiday completely invented by Disney—Walt Disney World Resort gave guests the chance to take a ride like never before.

A Disney Monorail Ride Unlike Any Other

The Walt Disney World Monorail first opened alongside Magic Kingdom Park on October 1, 1971, following the success of Disneyland Resort’s 1959 Monorail debut. Initially, it only transported guests between Magic Kingdom Park, the Transportation and Ticket Center, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, and Disney’s Contemporary Resort. In 1982, EPCOT joined the route, and the most recent addition, Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort station, completed the loop in 1988.

For decades, the Monorail has remained one of Disney’s most iconic transportation methods, shuttling guests between parks and resorts with ease. Though Walt Disney envisioned the Monorail as a futuristic public transit solution, its most extensive use remains within Disney Parks. Today, Walt Disney World Resort operates the busiest Monorail system in the United States, surpassing other installations in tourist destinations like Las Vegas and various airports.

Since 1989, the Monorail has run on Mark VI trains, and Disney decided to celebrate this long-standing milestone in a way no one expected—by declaring March 6 “National Monorail Day.” The announcement came in an Instagram post:

Mark VI Monorail + March 6 = National Monorail Day! 🎉🚝🎉🚝🎉🚝🎉🚝🎉🚝🎉

While guests weren’t actually locked inside a Monorail for hours, Disney surprised fans with a four-hour-long Monorail experience—right from their couches. In a newly released ambiance video, the official Disney Parks YouTube channel allowed viewers to ride along the Monorail’s EPCOT route without ever stepping inside the park.

The footage takes fans on a soothing, uninterrupted journey between EPCOT and the Transportation and Ticket Center, making for the perfect background video for Disney lovers craving a bit of the park at home. The video doesn’t include routes on the Magic Kingdom Express or Resort lines, but it still delivers a relaxing taste of the Most Magical Place on Earth.

Disney Parks Fans Can’t Get Enough

Disney Parks fans were quick to react, with many praising the unexpected addition to Disney’s digital content offerings. Some even requested similar videos from around Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

“This is exactly the kind of content we want, the sights and sounds of the Disney Parks, with the access only Disney can provide itself,” @pco9672 commented. “Although, we do want to hear the announcements, and door chimes, it’s all part of the experience!!”

“Absolutely fantastic,” @jacksongraham9408 replied. “Everyone is saying the same thing and I’ll echo it, this is awesome Disney Parks content. Original, distinct, pure. This is the kind of memory we take home and cherish after a trip, and now we get to have more of it at home. Absolutely phenomenal, whoever you are at Disney PR / Marketing. This caters to most all of the Disney Parks fans, even the most niche and purist. Awesome. Fantastic. 10/10 will ride again.”
