EPCOT’s troubled in-ground lights are back in the spotlight, but perhaps not for the reason Disney originally intended.
The lighting system throughout World Celebration Gardens was supposed to help give the redesigned heart of EPCOT a striking appearance after dark. Instead, keeping portions of it working and secured has turned into an ongoing problem.
Disney has repaired the area before. It has blocked sections from guests. Crews have even resorted to fastening loose pieces directly into the pavement.
Now, barriers have returned to the same troubled area, raising questions about whether another repair is coming — or whether Disney could eventually decide enough is enough.
Half of the Central Planter Is Blocked
Guests visiting World Celebration Gardens will currently find rolling barriers surrounding roughly half of its central planter.
Disney is using movable hedge walls to conceal the area, with greenery helping the barriers blend into their surroundings. Together, they prevent guests from walking through a large portion of the space behind Spaceship Earth.
A nearby pathway has also been restricted with retractable stanchions.
There’s no obvious major project underway behind those walls yet. No significant equipment or construction materials were visible when the barriers went up.
Disney also hasn’t announced what it’s doing.
The history of this particular location, however, provides one potential explanation.
The Lighting Has Never Been Reliable
Problems with World Celebration’s in-ground lighting stretch back almost to the area’s opening.
After a long stretch of inconsistent operation, Disney finally had the lighting system fully functioning again in December 2024.
Within weeks, another problem emerged.
By January 2025, strips were once again separating from the pavement. The mortar underneath continued to deteriorate, allowing portions to rise out of the ground.
At that point, this wasn’t simply about whether the lights looked good at night. Popped-up sections could become a tripping hazard for guests walking through the area.
Disney eventually needed another solution.
Repairs Haven’t Ended the Problem
In June 2025, Disney closed off a substantial portion of the planter.
Crews ultimately secured loosened plastic strips to the ground with screws, providing a temporary way to keep them from continuing to pop up.
It was a practical response, but clearly not what Disney originally envisioned for a centerpiece of the redesigned EPCOT.
That’s why the newest barriers are so intriguing.
Disney could be preparing to make a larger repair, potentially addressing whatever has caused the repeated deterioration underneath the lighting strips.
But there’s another option.
How Much Longer Does Disney Keep Fixing It?
Disney could ultimately decide that maintaining the lighting isn’t worth the continued trouble.
To be clear, Disney hasn’t confirmed that it’s removing anything. At this point, even the exact purpose of the newest barriers remains unknown.
Permanent removal is simply one possibility given the feature’s history.
It would also represent a significant concession.
World Celebration Gardens only opened in December 2023. The idea that Disney could remove part of its original design less than three years later shows just how persistent these problems have become.
Disney could still find a permanent solution and restore the lighting to its intended condition.
After repeated failures, closures, deteriorating materials, and temporary repairs, though, the company faces the same question once again.
Does Disney spend more to save the troubled EPCOT feature, or finally move on without it?
