Disney Issues Calm-Down Notice Before Resort-Wide Alarm Test

If you’ve got coffee or a character breakfast on your mind, Disney’s Riviera Resort is a delicious place to be. It’s also a place with a notice worth knowing about this Monday. Fire alarm testing is planned for the afternoon, and the notice says guests may experience strobe lights and loud ringing tones.

Disney World resorts can feel magical and unlike any other hotel in the world. Let’s talk about what’s planned, what isn’t covered, and where to eat when you’re ready.

The Notice, Start to Finish

Fire alarm testing is scheduled at Disney’s Riviera Resort from 1 PM to 3:30 PM on Monday, October 12th. That’s a 2.5 hour window.

During that time, you may experience strobe lights and loud ringing tones. You can stay in the building. If you or someone in your family is sensitive to noise, you may want to make other plans.

Reading Between the Lines, Carefully

Notice the phrase “may experience.” That describes a possibility. The notice doesn’t say the alarms will sound for the whole window, and it doesn’t say how often or how long the tones will ring.

It also tells guests they can stay in the building, which means the testing isn’t described as an evacuation or a closure. We’re sticking to that language, because it’s all we have.

The notice is aimed at guests staying at the Riviera and anyone popping over for the dining and experiences. Our suggestion for visitors is to consider spending that time outside, since it might get loud. That’s our own advice, not a requirement.

The notice doesn’t say whether specific restaurants will be handled differently, so we can’t tell you how the dining rooms will be affected.

What We Don’t Know

Let’s be upfront about the gaps. We don’t know how long the tones will ring or how often. We don’t know whether restaurants or other areas will be treated differently. And we don’t know whether the Skyliner or buses will be affected.

If you have a reservation that falls inside the window and want specifics, it’s reasonable to ask Disney directly.

Fact Versus Opinion

A quick note on how we’re writing this. The date, the time window, the possibility of strobe lights and loud ringing tones, and the fact that guests can stay in the building all come from the notice. The suggestion to spend the window outside is ours.

The same goes for the food. The menu descriptions, like the character breakfast and the fireworks views at dinner, are details we can share. Calling the Riviera a hidden gem, and naming our favorite spots, is opinion. We’ll label it as such so you always know which is which.

Okay, Now the Food

In our opinion, the Riviera is a bit of a hidden gem for food. While it’s a bit easier for resort guests to use the Skyliner, other guests can still easily check out the options.

We love Le Petit Cafe for small bites and coffee. And we find ourselves at Topolino’s Terrace more often than not.

Topolino’s Terrace is on the top floor, so you get gorgeous views of the resort.

Breakfast is a prix fixe character meal. You can meet Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy in their art-themed costumes.

Dinner is a bit more sophisticated, with fireworks views. If you’re hoping for a character meal, though, they’re only available at breakfast.

Getting Around From the Riviera

One major perk of the Riviera is the Skyliner, which can easily get you to EPCOT and Hollywood Studios. It makes park hopping a little easier, especially if you’re focusing on those two parks. Buses also go to the other parks and locations around the property.

Timing Your Visit Around the Window

The testing window runs from 1 PM to 3:30 PM, so the hours before and after it fall outside that stretch. If a quieter visit matters to you, those are the times to think about. That’s simply an observation about the clock, since the notice doesn’t say what the resort will be like outside the window.

For anyone with a reservation, a mealtime, or an appointment close to the window’s edges, keeping the exact times in mind helps. The window starts at 1 PM and ends at 3:30 PM, and that’s the information we have.

If You’re Noise-Sensitive

The notice’s advice is clear. If you or someone in your family is sensitive to noise, make other plans. That could mean visiting before 1 PM or after 3:30 PM, or spending the window elsewhere on property.

If you’d rather stay in the building, you can. Just know that strobe lights and loud ringing tones are among the things you may experience during the testing window.

Your Turn

Do you have a favorite meal at the Riviera, or do you plan to dodge the testing window? Tell us in the comments what you’re ordering, and how you’d spend those 2.5 hours.
