Disney is Building a Wall, But It Is Not What You Think
Disney is constructing a new boundary wall along the Sassagoula River at Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa. The work could disrupt boat transportation, adding to ongoing Disney transportation issues nationwide.
The River Wall Project
The Sassagoula River carries the Sassagoula River Cruise, connecting multiple resorts to Disney Springs. Construction spotted today shows:
- Boundary wall materials stacked beside riverbank
- Yellow floating turbidity barriers along wall sections
- Construction equipment near certain areas
- Stakes behind existing metal barriers

The yellow barriers serve important purposes:
- Minimize sediment transport
- Protect riverbank from erosion
- Reduce construction debris entering waterway
Parts of the existing river wall remain untouched but will likely be updated as the project progresses.
No Service Interruption Announced Yet
Disney has not announced any interruption to Sassagoula River Cruise service. The boat connects:
- Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa
- Port Orleans Resort – Riverside
- Port Orleans Resort – French Quarter
- Old Key West Resort
- Disney Springs
However, the construction raises questions about whether boat service might need temporary suspension during heavy equipment work or wall installation.
Broader Transportation Problems
The river wall construction is just one of several transportation disruptions affecting Disney parks nationwide.
Wilderness Lodge Boat Closure:
Disney’s Wilderness Lodge boat dock closes April 13 – May 1, 2026 for maintenance. During this period:
- No boat service to Magic Kingdom
- No boat service to Fort Wilderness
- No boat service to Contemporary Resort
- Bus service available instead
Important Note: There’s no direct bus from Wilderness Lodge to Contemporary Resort. Guests must take a bus to Magic Kingdom, then transfer to the monorail, adding time and complexity.
The boat ride across Bay Lake is one of the highlights of a Wilderness Lodge stay. Swapping it for a bus represents a real downgrade in atmosphere.
Disneyland’s ART System Shutting Down:
The bigger news comes from California. The Anaheim Resort Transportation (ART) system is permanently closing March 31, 2026.
What ART Was: For decades, bright blue ART buses transported off-site hotel guests to Disneyland Resort. The system ran routes from dozens of nearby hotels through early morning rope drop and late-night post-fireworks returns.
For families without cars, international visitors, and large groups, ART wasn’t just convenient—it was essential.
The Replacement:
Garden Grove and the Garden Grove Tourism Improvement District are launching a new shuttle service in late March, operated by Parking Company of America.
Service Details:
- Runs between Disneyland Resort transit hub and 10 Garden Grove hotels
- Requires per-guest fee (pricing not yet released)
Participating Hotels:
- Sheraton Garden Grove – Anaheim South
- Hyatt Regency Orange County
- Embassy Suites by Hilton Anaheim South
- Delta Hotels by Marriott Anaheim Garden Grove
- Anaheim Marriott Suites
- Hilton Garden Inn Anaheim/Garden Grove
- Homewood Suites by Hilton Anaheim – Main Gate Area
- Residence Inn Anaheim Resort Area/Garden Grove
- Great Wolf Lodge Southern California
- Hampton Inn & Suites Anaheim/Garden Grove
Problem: Guests staying at off-site Anaheim hotels NOT on this list will need to find alternative transportation—parking, rideshares, or switching hotels.
How This Affects Your Disney Trip
Transportation disruptions ripple through Disney vacations more than guests expect.
Impact:
- Longer commutes eat into valuable early morning park time
- Unplanned transfers add mental load to already complex trips
- Lost time affects crowd avoidance and Lightning Lane strategies
For Wilderness Lodge Guests (April 13 – May 1): Build extra time into mornings that would normally start with boat rides.
For Garden Grove Hotel Guests at Disneyland: Check the shuttle fee structure and schedules when released. Compare pricing against rideshares to determine the best option.
Disney Planning Tips
Transportation sets the tone for the entire day at Disney parks. Getting from the hotel to the park isn’t a small detail; it’s foundational to the vacation experience.
With the Sassagoula River wall construction at Walt Disney World, Wilderness Lodge dock closure, and Anaheim ART shutdown, Disney transportation is facing significant changes across both coasts.
Guests with upcoming trips should:
- Research current transportation options for their specific resorts
- Build buffer time into morning schedules
- Have backup transportation plans
- Monitor Disney announcements for service interruptions
The river wall construction may or may not interrupt Sassagoula River Cruise service, but combined with other transportation issues, it represents ongoing challenges to Disney’s once-reliable transportation networks.
