Adventureland is preparing to lose one of its biggest attractions, with Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye set to close in September.
Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye has sent Disneyland guests through a crumbling temple since 1995, using motion-based ride vehicles to recreate the chaos of an Indiana Jones movie.
The attraction remains one of the park’s most ambitious thrill rides. Guests encounter snakes, skeletons, lava, collapsing ruins, and a rolling boulder during a journey built around the mythology of a cursed archaeological site.
Disneyland has now confirmed that Indiana Jones Adventure will close beginning September 8, 2026. The resort has not announced a reopening date or revealed the full scope of the planned work.
Once the ride closes, Adventureland will be left with three operating attractions: Jungle Cruise, Adventureland Treehouse inspired by Walt Disney’s Swiss Family Robinson, and Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.
The shutdown will temporarily remove Adventureland’s only major thrill ride. The remaining attractions are slower experiences, leaving guests seeking faster rides to head elsewhere in Disneyland Park.
Disneyland Has Continued Updating the Ride
Indiana Jones Adventure opened on March 3, 1995, as part of a collaboration between Disney and filmmaker George Lucas. The attraction arrived more than 17 years before Disney acquired Lucasfilm – and, as a result, the wider Indiana Jones franchise.
Its Enhanced Motion Vehicles travel along a fixed route while independently pitching, bouncing, and swerving. The technology allows each troop transport to react to the temple environment, creating a rougher and more unpredictable experience than a standard dark ride.
Disneyland’s version later inspired Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Crystal Skull at Tokyo DisneySea. That attraction opened in 2001 with a Central American temple setting and a storyline involving the Fountain of Youth.
The Tokyo DisneySea ride has been closed since August 2025 for an extended refurbishment. Its reopening timeframe has not been confirmed, meaning both Disney versions of the Indiana Jones ride will soon be unavailable at the same time.
The upcoming Disneyland shutdown follows several shorter closures. Indiana Jones Adventure was unavailable from March 17 through April 24, 2025, shortly after marking its 30th anniversary. It also briefly closed in December.
Disney has continued restoring individual parts of the attraction between refurbishments. In January 2025, Disneyland reinstated the complete Sallah pre-show video, which had been missing since the resort’s lengthy 2020 closure.
The collapsing bridge effect returned in January 2026. The scene uses vehicle movement and falling ropes to make the bridge appear unstable as guests cross above the temple’s lava-filled chamber.
More work was visible around the attraction’s exit by April. Disneyland added a new winch, refreshed its water tower, installed weathered crates, and displayed additional temple tablets throughout the archaeological dig site.
Disney has not said whether September’s closure will focus on routine maintenance, further effect restorations, or larger mechanical upgrades.
Indiana Jones also has a presence at Walt Disney World. Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular continues to recreate scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
A new Indiana Jones attraction is also planned for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The ride will replace DINOSAUR and take guests inside a Maya temple in search of a mythical creature when the park’s Tropical Americas land opens in 2027.
More Disneyland Closures Are Approaching
Indiana Jones Adventure is part of a growing list of attractions scheduled to close across Disneyland Resort.
Haunted Mansion will close from August 8 through August 20 for its annual seasonal transformation. The attraction returns on August 21 as Haunted Mansion Holiday, featuring Jack Skellington and characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993).
Mark Twain Riverboat will begin an open-ended refurbishment on September 8, the same day Indiana Jones Adventure closes. Disney has not announced when the Frontierland riverboat will return.
At Disney California Adventure, Silly Symphony Swings has been closed since April 27. Portions of the dismantled attraction have since been reinstalled, but the resort has not provided a reopening date.
A permanent closure is planned for 2027. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will close after more than 20 years as Disney prepares the surrounding area for future development.
Disney initially planned to remove the dark ride in early 2026. The closure was delayed to preserve additional family-friendly capacity while other projects move forward at Disney California Adventure.
The area is expected to make way for Disney’s planned Avatar destination, although the company has not shared a full construction timeline.
Indiana Jones Adventure remains available through September 7. After that, Disneyland guests will need to wait for Disney to confirm when the Temple of the Forbidden Eye will reopen.
