Disney Has Shoved Best Former CEO to the Side to Honor Bob Iger
Disney announced its 2026 Disney Legends class, and Bob Iger made the list. Michael Eisner, the CEO who saved Disney from financial collapse, still hasn’t been honored.

The Eisner Problem
Michael Eisner became Disney CEO in 1984 when the company faced:
- Hostile takeover attempts
- Financial collapse
- Lost creative direction after Walt Disney’s death
Eisner’s Achievements:
- Saved Disney from financial ruin
- Led the Disney Animation Renaissance (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King)
- Opened Disney’s Hollywood Studios (1989)
- Opened Disney’s Animal Kingdom (1998)
- Launched Euro Disney/Disneyland Paris (1992)
These accomplishments created the foundation for modern Disney.
Iger’s Disney Record
Iger led Disney for years, but his legacy centers on acquisitions:
- Pixar
- Marvel
- Lucasfilm
- Fox Assets
Current Status of Iger’s Acquisitions:
Pixar: Struggling at box office except for sequels. Original films underperforming compared to earlier successes.
Marvel & Star Wars: In a slump. Audience fatigue from oversaturation across theatrical releases and streaming series.
Other Properties:
- Willow (streaming series cancelled after one season)
- Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (underperformed at the box office)
- Fox acquisition ($71 billion—considered too expensive)
The 50-Year Disney Award Controversy
Iger awarded himself a 50-year Disney employee award despite 22 of those years being at ABC before Disney’s 1995 acquisition.
Technically, he wasn’t a 50-year Disney employee—he was counting years at a different company.
Social Media Reaction
Travis Cooper (MouseVault): “Bob Iger being a Disney Legend before Michael Eisner is all you need to know about the state of Disney right now.”
Enrico Matassa: “How about Michael Eisner? Who reinvigorated the company and made all that money that Iger used to just buy IPs and studios”
Jomodi Marsta: “There are few people in this world who deserve a Disney Legend award more than Michael Eisner. Yes, he left on bad terms, and he made a lot of decisions that many folks don’t agree with, but he saved the company and the brand. No one would be getting DL Awards without him.”
The Disney Timing Issue
Iger receives the honor immediately upon leaving. Eisner, who laid the groundwork for Disney’s current success, remains excluded.
This suggests Disney prioritizes recent leadership over executives who built the foundation.

Why This Matters for Disney
Yes, Eisner left on bad terms. Yes, he made controversial decisions.
But without Eisner:
- The Animation Renaissance wouldn’t have happened
- Disney’s theme park empire wouldn’t have expanded
- The profitable company Iger inherited wouldn’t have existed
Honoring Iger immediately while continuing to overlook Eisner sends a clear message about Disney’s current priorities and what the company chooses to remember versus what it prefers to forget.
