Disney Guest Claims a Bug Was Found in Food at Disney’s Contemporary Resort
Steakhouse 71 has been one of the easiest recommendations at Walt Disney World for years.
It opened at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in 2021 and replaced a restaurant named The Wave. This replacement has steaks, a strong breakfast, a bar menu that guests really enjoy, and a location reachable by monorail without leaving the resort loop. Reservations got genuinely hard to grab.
So an unannounced closure over Labor Day weekend got noticed fast.
Then a Reddit post began circulating with a much uglier explanation, and reservations began to vanish from people’s accounts in real time.

The Disney Closure
Steakhouse 71 closed unexpectedly on September 6.
Guests reported same-day cancellations, some while already driving to the resort. One said they were turned around at the gate, arriving for lunch. Another had a 9 a.m. cancellation with no email.
At least one party got a $100 Disney gift card by email.
The app listed the restaurant as closed rather than unavailable, which is a different status and something guests spotted immediately.
The Reddit Post
A user posting as BedbugsAnddisiney1 claimed the closure involved pests found under the restaurant’s carpet.
Their account: crews replacing the carpet found bed bugs, other insects, and mold underneath, and instead of closing to fumigate, new carpet went down anyway. Staff were allegedly told not to lean on soft surfaces without being told why.
The user said the restaurant closed only after a nearby guest found a bug in their food.
That post is the origin of essentially everything circulating right now.
What They Actually Said About the Food at Disney
This is the detail that traveled fastest, and it needs precision.
The poster was present as a guest and says another patron found an insect in their meal. They did not see it themselves. They never identified the insect.
When commenters pushed, they clarified twice.
“I did clarify in the comments, idk if a bedbug is what they found, it was just an insect.”
And later: “That I agree with, it was probably some other kind of insect in the food.”
So the person who started this does not claim bed bugs were in anyone’s food. They claim an unidentified insect was found, and separately, that bed bugs were under the carpeting.
That distinction has vanished almost everywhere the story has been repeated.
Commenters Pushed Back Too
Several people raised the same objection.
“I thought bed bugs famously hide themselves during the day and are tiny? Never heard of them appearing on food, seems like hyperbole,” wrote user Unlucky-Jello-5660.
“Bedbugs at a resort isn’t crazy. I’ve never seen one in somebody’s food,” wrote user murse_joe.
One offered an alternative. “Could be some other bug, termites comes to mind, and rumors spiraled,” wrote user AceGirl2788.
Others disagreed, arguing bed bugs do leave carpeting during heavy infestations.
What Disney Says
Cast members were reportedly told this was unplanned maintenance. That is the official line.
Disney has not addressed the pest claims publicly.
Worth adding: Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation records show Steakhouse 71 met state standards in an August 31, 2026, audit with zero high-priority violations.
That does not confirm or rule out anything that happened afterward. It is simply the only official documentation available, and it does not back the more severe claims.
The restaurant was listed as returning on September 7.
People Are Canceling Regardless
“Just cancelled our reservation we have in 3 weeks,” wrote user hydvn6.
“I was going to book Steakhouse in 2 weeks but I think I’ll pass to be safe,” wrote another.
Some were calmer. “Things like this happen. It is very difficult to prevent but how Disney responds to it matters,” wrote user Kind_Indication8527.
Even the original poster tried to slow things down. “I wouldn’t go too crazy, this stuff happens, it’s usually just handled right away. Disney is always pretty clean.”
Why It Spread Like This
The silence did the work.
Disney closed a popular restaurant on a holiday weekend, canceled reservations day-of, and offered nothing beyond maintenance. An anonymous post with a dramatic claim filled that space faster than anyone could check it.
“It’s always the coverup that gets you,” wrote user capntail.
Whether there is anything to cover up is unestablished. But when a company explains nothing, the internet writes its own explanation.
