Disney Fans Have Been Waiting 11 Years for This Grand Return, and It Finally Happened
Guests arriving at Disney’s Hollywood Studios this morning might see something peaking behind construction walls that has not been part of that Disney park’s skyline since February 2015. The Sorcerer’s Hat is back.
Crews installed the Sorcerer Mickey hat overnight at Hollywood Studios as part of the ongoing transformation of the former Animation Courtyard into the new Walt Disney Studios Lot. Walt Disney World shared a first look at the installation this morning, and the reaction from fans who have been asking when it would return for 11 years is exactly what you would expect.

Where It Is and What It Means for Disney
The new hat sits atop the entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation, the upcoming experience set to open later this summer that will invite guests into the process of creating animated films. The hat and facade are designed to resemble the actual Disney Animation headquarters in Burbank, California, creating a direct visual connection between the Hollywood Studios experience and the real-world building that inspired it.
The original Sorcerer’s Hat was removed beginning January 7, 2015, with the structure gone by February 25 of that year. Eleven years of Hollywood Studios without its most recognizable icon. The debates about whether removing it was the right call never fully ended. The fan conversation about when or whether it would return has been a consistent undercurrent in the community ever since.
This morning, that conversation has an answer.
The Broader Disney Transformation This Is Part Of
The hat is the most immediately recognizable element of a comprehensive reimagining that is converting the former Animation Courtyard into The Walt Disney Studios. A land inspired by several buildings found at the real Disney studio campus in Burbank. The pixie dusting effect from the Sorcerer’s Hat is designed to extend beyond The Magic of Disney Animation itself. Radiating outward as the visual centerpiece of the new land.
The Walt Disney Studios Lot will also include a version of the Studio Theater. This will continue to house The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure, and a soundstage area for a new Disney Jr. show. The former Star Wars Launch Bay building is being rethemed as part of the same project. The entire footprint of the former Animation Courtyard is being transformed into a cohesive studio campus environment.
The hat sitting atop the entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation is the architectural anchor of that environment. It is the thing guests will see first and orient themselves around, the same way generations of Hollywood Studios visitors once did around the original on Hollywood Boulevard.
Why Today Feels Different
The Sorcerer’s Hat was gone for eleven years. Guests who were children in 2015 are adults now. Parents who remembered it from their own childhood visits have kids who are seeing it for the first time. The return is nostalgic for guests who knew the original and exciting for the generation of Hollywood Studios visitors who only knew the park without it.
It came back overnight. Hollywood Studios woke up different this morning.
