When Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress closed its doors at Magic Kingdom on July 5, 2026, Disney fans knew a major transformation was underway. The legendary attraction, which first debuted at the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair before moving to Tomorrowland in 1975, had not undergone a significant narrative update since 1994.

Now, as the attraction’s scheduled late spring 2027 reopening draws closer, Imagineering is lifting the curtain on new details. From a newly launched preview gallery inside Disney’s Hollywood Studios to studio voice recording updates, Disney has officially confirmed some of the most exciting changes coming to the reimagined show.
The biggest surprise? A beloved voice actor from the 1994 version is returning to the show—this time stepping into an entirely new generation of the family.
From Daughter to Grandmother: Debi Derryberry’s Full-Circle Return
In an update shared by Walt Disney Imagineering, voice actress Debi Derryberry has officially joined the cast of the updated Carousel of Progress as Grandmother.

Longtime Disney parkgoers will immediately recognize Derryberry’s connection to the attraction. In the 1993 reimagining of the show, Derryberry provided the voice for Patricia (often called Patty or Trish), the family’s daughter featured throughout the four main acts. For over three decades, millions of guests heard her character talk about high-button shoes, line-shaft machinery, and 1990s virtual reality games.
Beyond her theme park legacy, Derryberry is an industry veteran best known as the iconic voice of Jimmy Neutron in Nickelodeon’s The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, and for dozens of roles across feature animation, television, and video games.

In studio photos released by Disney, Derryberry was seen back in the recording booth, bringing warmth and humor to the Grandmother character. The casting marks a full-circle moment for fans: the performer who voiced the young daughter in 1993 will now voice the family matriarch when the show returns in 2027.
Derryberry joins an all-star voice cast previously announced for the attraction:
- Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Malcolm in the Middle) voices Father (John).
- Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween, Freaky Friday) voices Mother (Sarah).
Hollywood Studios Preview: Costumes, Dioramas, and a Walt Animatronic
While construction continues inside Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom, guests can get a firsthand look at the attraction’s reimagining inside Walt Disney Presents at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. A preview exhibition recently debuted in the space, showcasing costume pieces, character sculpts, concept art, and detailed dioramas.

One of the exhibit’s major highlights is the reveal of an all-new show introduction. The updated experience will open with a prelude inspired by the classic 1964 television special Disneyland Goes to the World’s Fair. Using advanced Audio-Animatronics technology, a figure of Walt Disney himself will appear on a soundstage to introduce the attraction before guests rotate into Act I.
This historical opening pays tribute to Walt Disney’s personal involvement in creating the original show for General Electric, bridging mid-century optimism with modern storytelling.
Four New Eras of Progress
The central premise of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress has always been to celebrate human achievement through the eyes of an American family across four eras. However, the show’s former 1990s final act—featuring car phones, laserdiscs, and early voice-activated appliances—had grown outdated.

The 2027 update completely overhauls the timeline, guiding guests through four distinct eras of innovation:
- Act I (1969): Set during the midsummer peak of the space race, this scene shows the family watching the historic Apollo 11 moon landing on a console television amid late-1960s pop-culture decor.
- Act II (1985): Set on Halloween night, this act highlights the rise of home video game consoles, personal computers, VCRs, and 1980s fashion trends.
- Act III (1999): Set on New Year’s Eve as the family prepares for the turn of the millennium, this scene explores the early consumer internet boom and Y2K technology hype.
- Act IV (Distant Future): The final act leaps into a modern vision of the future, featuring smart-home automation, sustainable technology, and sleek fashion.

The costumes displayed at Hollywood Studios showcase Imagineering’s attention to period-accurate design. For example, Mother’s costume for Act IV features a futuristic yellow-and-blue dress paired with beige trousers, blending synthetic textures with retro-inspired tailoring.
Looking Ahead to Late Spring 2027
When Walt Disney developed the Carousel of Progress, he famously noted that the show should never be considered truly finished, as progress itself never stops.

By reuniting legacy performers like Debi Derryberry alongside Bryan Cranston and Jamie Lee Curtis, Imagineering is bridging nostalgic history with fresh theatrical performances. Combined with the new Walt Disney Animatronic intro, updated dioramas, and fresh musical arrangements of the classic Sherman Brothers anthem “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow,” the updated attraction is set to inspire parkgoers for generations to come.
Guests can look forward to the next chapter in Tomorrowland’s history when Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress officially reopens in late spring 2027.
