Magic Kingdom is heading toward another major change, but this one has nothing to do with replacing a ride or building a new land.
Instead, Disney is preparing to make a rare update to the transportation system surrounding its flagship theme park. A newly filed permit reveals work planned for a backstage marina, and that project comes as Disney prepares to add something its Magic Kingdom fleet hasn’t received in 50 years.
A brand-new boat is coming.
The vessel, named the Meg Gilbert Crofton, is currently under construction and expected to debut in 2027. It will become the fourth boat in the Magic Kingdom fleet and the first new addition in half a century.
Now, Disney is preparing the infrastructure needed behind the scenes.
Disney Files Permit for Backstage Marina
Disney recently submitted an application to the South Florida Water Management District for a project called the NSA Dock Expansion.
The project focuses on the North Service Area Marina at the northern end of Bay Lake. This isn’t a guest-facing marina. Disney uses the backstage facility to store and service its watercraft fleet, so most visitors will never see the construction.
The permit covers approximately 0.89 acres east of Facilities Way and calls for new docks at the marina.
Disney’s plans include new floating dock extensions and additions. Some pilings will be replaced or relocated, while eight new pilings will also be installed. The project includes dredging work as well.
While those details may sound like routine backstage construction, the reason behind the work makes this project much more interesting.
A Historic Addition Is Coming in 2027
The dock project is connected to Disney adding the Meg Gilbert Crofton to its Magic Kingdom fleet.
Once completed, the boat will become the fourth vessel in that fleet.
More significantly, Disney hasn’t added a new boat to it in 50 years.
That’s a long time for any piece of Walt Disney World transportation to remain relatively unchanged, especially considering how dramatically the resort itself has grown.
For generations of guests, traveling across the water has been part of visiting Magic Kingdom. While attractions naturally receive most of the attention, Disney’s transportation network plays a huge role in moving thousands of people around the resort every day.
The Meg Gilbert Crofton will bring a rare update to that system when it begins operating in 2027.
Magic Kingdom Is Preparing for Its Future
The timing also comes as Disney moves forward with major expansion plans for Magic Kingdom.
Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land are both planned for the park’s future. The original report raises the possibility that Disney could be preparing its transportation fleet for larger crowds once those expansions arrive, though Disney has not confirmed that connection.
The new boat should arrive before those larger projects are completed.
That means Disney can have additional transportation infrastructure in place as Magic Kingdom continues evolving.
For guests, the most noticeable part of this project won’t be the marina construction. Most visitors won’t see that work at all.
Instead, they’ll eventually see a new vessel on the water.
After 50 years, Magic Kingdom’s transportation fleet is finally getting a new addition, and Disney is already making the backstage changes needed to prepare for its arrival.
