After 30 Years, Disney Confirms Changes Hitting Beloved Space Mountain Ride
Disney is making some changes to one version of its Space Mountain attraction.
With versions at most Disney resorts, Space Mountain is one of the company’s most iconic attractions. But over the years, it’s seen no shortage of change. The indoor roller coaster—set almost entirely in darkness—takes guests on a thrilling journey through outer space. While the core concept remains consistent, each version has evolved in its own way.
For example, Tokyo Disney Resort totally shuttered its version last year to make way for a bigger, better take on the roller coaster. Meanwhile, Hong Kong Disneyland and Disneyland Paris have both embraced a version of the attraction inspired by Star Wars, known as Hyperspace Mountain.
Disney Park Updating Space Mountain
Lately, fans have theorized that Disneyland Paris could be on the verge of reverting its Hyperspace Mountain – which has experienced recurrent operational issues in recent years – to its original iteration, known as Space Mountain: De la terre à la lune.
Now, however, that seems unlikely – at least in the near future – considering the fact that Disney has dropped details about updates heading to the ride.
As confirmed by DLP Report, the attraction is set to receive update lighting packages which will change in color with each train launch.
Unlike other Space Mountain attractions, the launch of the version in Discoveryland (the park’s take on Tomorrowland) at Disneyland Paris can be seen from the ride’s exterior.
Disneyland Paris is reportedly also in the process of preparing 30th anniversary merchandise for Hyperspace Mountain. It’s worth noting that this anniversary has already passed as of June 1. Further updates are expected later this month.
When exactly guests will be able to enjoy the new lights on Space Mountain remains to be seen. The attraction is currently closed, having shut down for refurbishment from June 2 until June 6. This isn’t its first refurbishment this year, with Disney previously also closing the ride for maintenance in March.
