Each of Disney’s four theme parks has its own distinct theme, making each one a unique experience beloved by guests. The Magic Kingdom embodies the timeless Disney magic we all know and love, while Disney’s Hollywood Studios immerses visitors in the worlds of iconic franchises like Toy Story and Star Wars.
Animal Kingdom focuses on conservation, offering guests the chance to learn about various animal species and what we can do to help protect them. Lastly, EPCOT invites guests to explore diverse cultures, savor global cuisines, and imagine the possibilities for the future.

Disney fans were left heartbroken last week when they discovered the manatee exhibit at EPCOT’s The Seas with Nemo & Friends pavilion had been closed. Beloved residents Inigo and Lil Joe, two manatees who had charmed visitors with their gentle nature and love for lettuce, were no longer part of the attraction.
Now, Disney has spoken out, explaining the decision to relocate Inigo and Lil Joe, and sharing their plans for the exhibit’s future.

Saying Goodbye to Inigo and Lil Joe
Inigo and Lil Joe were paired together in September 2024, though their bond took time to develop. Fans quickly grew fond of the duo, often flocking to the pavilion to watch them float peacefully in their tanks. When visitors noticed the manatee area roped off and curtains hung in front of the glass last week, speculation about the animals’ absence spread quickly.
As one X user, @DrewDisneyDude, noted during Inigo’s early days at EPCOT:
“Inigo the manatee has arrived at EPCOT! He’s still getting used to his new home and is very shy. Lil’ Joe is trying to interact with him, but Inigo isn’t interested yet. 🥲”

Sadly, their time at EPCOT has come to an end. Disney confirmed that the manatees have been moved to the Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. This facility will serve as their new long-term home, where they will continue to receive care.
The Reason Behind the Move
Disney cited conservation efforts as the primary motivation for the change. According to The Orlando Sentinel, Lil Joe, who was first rescued as an orphan near Daytona Beach in 1989, has faced repeated challenges adapting to the wild.
Despite numerous attempts to release him into his natural habitat, he was unable to survive outside a controlled environment.
The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park specializes in long-term care for animals like Lil Joe and Inigo, making it an ideal location for their continued well-being.
This move aligns with Disney’s broader mission to support wildlife rehabilitation and increase manatee populations, as environmental changes continue to threaten their survival.
What’s Next for the Exhibit?
Disney has assured fans that the manatee tanks at The Seas with Nemo & Friends will not remain empty for long. Steve Soares, a Disney World entertainment host, shared on X:
“The two manatees, Lil’ Joe & Inigo, have been moved from the Living Seas at EPCOT to a new facility. There will be new manatees arriving. The Seas will focus on short-term rehabs and returning them to the wild.”

While no official timeline has been announced for the arrival of the new manatees, the shift in focus to short-term rehabilitation reflects Disney’s commitment to its conservation mission. This adjustment allows The Seas pavilion to play a more active role in helping manatees recover and return to the wild.
Mixed Reactions from Fans
Though Disney’s intentions are rooted in animal welfare, many fans remain disappointed by the loss of such beloved characters. Lil Joe, in particular, had a storied history, having been cared for by facilities like SeaWorld Orlando, the Cincinnati Zoo, and Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo before his time at EPCOT.
For some, the closure of the exhibit feels like the end of an era. However, others appreciate Disney’s efforts to prioritize the health and safety of the animals in their care. The promise of new manatees arriving soon has also offered hope for fans eager to reconnect with these gentle giants.
A New Chapter for EPCOT’s Manatee Exhibit
While the departure of Inigo and Lil Joe marks a bittersweet moment, it underscores Disney’s ongoing commitment to conservation. The decision to refocus the exhibit on short-term rehabilitation ensures that The Seas with Nemo & Friends will continue to play a vital role in manatee recovery efforts.
