As September approaches, many are getting ready for the upcoming Halloween season. Of course, when it comes to Disney theme parks, Halloween starts exceptionally early, with Walt Disney World Resort commencing its annual Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party sooner than ever.
As for the company’s original park, Disneyland Resort, Oogie Boogie Bash–A Disney Halloween Party began on August 25, and officials have recently confirmed that some children’s costumes are banned.
Most Disney park fans know the rules: guests aged 14 and over cannot wear costumes or masks (unless for medical reasons), while children can dress up as their favorite characters. This is why a guest may see hundreds of mini Elsas, for example, running down Main Street, U.S.A., while on a Disney vacation.
However, there is an important caveat to the costume rules. During seasonal events such as Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park and the Oogie Boogie Bash event at Disneyland’s Disney California Adventure Park, all guests are permitted to wear costumes.
Per the official Disneyland Resort website, the rules for the Oogie Boogie Bash–A Disney Halloween Party are as follows:
All Guests may dress as their favorite character, but may not pose for pictures or sign autographs for other Guests.
Costumes must be family-friendly and may not be obstructive, offensive, objectionable or violent.
Costumes may not contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon.
Costumes may not contain sharp objects, pointed objects or materials that may accidentally strike another Guest.
Layered costumes or costume props that surround the entire body are strongly discouraged and may be subject to additional security screening.
Costumes may not reach or drag on the ground (e.g., full-length Princess dresses)
The rules for costumes are there for health and safety purposes, so it’s good for guests to know them before heading out to the parks at any time of the year, not just around Halloween.
However, it’s worth noting that the cast members at the gates for these events have the final say on who gets admitted. This reminder was included in a recent interaction on planDisney, Disney’s official vacation planning channel, which wrote, “Keep in mind that the cast members at security also have the ultimate say in what is allowed and not allowed.”
This information came as part of a longer response answering a guest’s question regarding Oogie Boogie Bash costume rules for children. Interestingly, planDisney confirmed that Deadpool costumes, in their full likeness to the Marvel character, are banned under the no-mask-wearing rule.
Answering the question, “We have tickets to Oogie Boogie Bash next month. Both of my boys have decided to go as Deadpool. The full mask with the darkened eyes wouldn’t be allowed with the guidelines, correct?” planDisney confirmed that this costume would not be allowed in the parks.
“It sounds like you’ve already reviewed the costume guidelines, which outline that Guests aged 13 and under can wear some masks as long as they do not cover the entire face and the eyes are visible,” planDisney responded. “This leads me to believe that it may be best for you to have a somewhat altered option for the mask portion of their costumes.”
So, even though costumes are welcome, the complete Deadpool outfit would be banned under this directive.
“It’s also worth mentioning that costumes cannot contain any weapons that resemble or could easily be mistaken for an actual weapon,” planDisney continued. “Although, it’s totally fine for Deadpool to come equipped with a chimichanga or two.”
Chimichangas are commonly associated with the Merc with a Mouth, as he is often seen eating Mexican cuisine in Marvel comic books.
Deadpool has been appearing at Disney California Adventure and Walt Disney Studios Park in Disneyland Paris since late July, coinciding with the release of Shawn Levy’s Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) in movie theaters. The Marvel movie became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time.
While the support for Deadpool has been unparalleled, his place in the Disney theme parks has been contested by fans who claim that an R-rated character should not be present in a family-friendly environment. The character was captured speaking about dating apps in a recent interaction at Avengers Campus, which left some fans disgruntled.
Deadpool will likely be a popular choice for costumes at Halloween parties on both the East and West Coasts, but it will be interesting to see if rules are followed regarding mask-wearing and if there are any discrepancies across party nights and parks.
It has been noted before that attire rules have seemingly become more lax in recent years, with reports of offensive and vulgar clothing worn by guests around the parks and the free apparel trend that escalated on social media in 2022.

As for Oogie Boogie Bash–A Disney Halloween Party, all tickets for the festive event have now sold out. The party commenced on August 25, 2024, and runs on select nights through October 31, 2024.
From Haunted Mansion Holiday to Mater’s Graveyard JamBOOree and exclusive character interactions, Oogie Boogie Bash more than makes up for its ticket price. Not only that, but special shows like the Frightfully Fun Parade and the Villain’s Grove trail allow guests to see their favorite villains from across the the Disney canon.
