On September 15, Dick Van Dyke missed his scheduled appearance at the 2024 Emmy Awards held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. His absence raised concerns among fans and industry colleagues alike.

The 98-year-old actor was confirmed as a presenter by the Television Academy and ABC a week before the event. His notable nonappearance, especially as he was the only announced presenter missing from the ceremony, prompted immediate speculation within the entertainment community.

The lack of information about his well-being has left many eager for updates.

Dick Van Dyke Celebrates a Legendary Career

Despite missing the event, Van Dyke’s accomplishments in the lead-up to the Emmys have been celebrated. His recent special, Dick Van Dyke 98 Years of Magic, won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Special at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 7. This special contained a mix of archival footage and live performances.

While Van Dyke did not personally receive an Emmy for the special due to his non-producer status, the Mary Poppins (1964) star expressed gratitude towards those involved during his acceptance speech. This accolade marked another highlight in a distinguished career that includes four Primetime Emmy wins, three of which were for The Dick Van Dyke Show.

Earlier this year, Van Dyke became the oldest person to be nominated for and win a Daytime Emmy for guest starring as Timothy Robicheaux on Days of Our Lives.

β€œI feel like a spy from nighttime television,” he joked. β€œI’m the oldest nominee in history. I’ve been playing old men all my life. If I’d known I was going to live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself.”

β€œI’m 98 years old. Can you believe it?” Van Dyke continued.” This tops a lifetime of 80 years in the business. I love you; God bless.”

A Glimpse into His Health

Speculation has arisen regarding the reasons behind Van Dyke’s absence from the Emmys, with discussions about his overall health status trending primarily due to his age. Before the event, Van Dyke made a public appearance at the Creative Arts Emmys alongside his wife, Arlene Silver. He posed for red carpet photos seated in a chair while Silver, 52, stood beside him.

Van Dyke has been open about the challenges and joys of aging. During his acceptance speech on September 7, he joked that he was considering future roles: β€œI’ve been in the business for 75 years; I can’t believe it that I’m still here and performing! I’m looking for work if anyone’s interested.”

Dick Van Dyke’s team didn’t respond to requests for comment from Us Weekly and other outlets.
