Confirmed: Michael Keaton’s Batman Set for New Sequel to the ‘89 Classic

Michael Keaton’s iconic portrayal of the Caped Crusader has left an enduring mark on film history, with Tim Burton’s 1989 classic and its 1992 follow-up, Batman Returns, cementing his legacy. Fans have long celebrated his version of the Dark Knight, and now that legacy is set to expand once again.

Per ComicBook.com, a brand-new novel by John Jackson Miller titled “Batman: Revolution” has been announced. Scheduled for release on October 28, 2025, this story will take place between the 1989 film and Batman Returns and will follow the events of Miller’s 2024 book, “Batman: Resurrection.”

Before this upcoming release, the Burtonverse was already thriving in multiple mediums. After Batman Returns, DC Comics continued Keaton’s journey with the comic series “Batman ’89,” which spans six issues and was followed by “Echoes.”

Michael Keaton’s Batman even made a surprise return in the 2023 DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film, The Flash, as part of a Multiversal adventure.

Last year, Miller further enriched the Burton/Keaton timeline with “Batman: Resurrection,” a novel that delves into Bruce Wayne’s turmoil following The  Joker’s death—delivered with the stylistic flair of the original films.

Author John Jackson Miller shared his insights on his evolving Burtonverse projects, saying in a statement: “Both ‘Resurrection’ and ‘Revolution’ take place between Batman and Batman Returns, and I tried to write them both as if they came out then, too — drawing on characters who appeared in both films. You’ll see old favorites — and some new ones, which I again approached with an eye to Tim Burton’s tragi-comic aesthetic.”

He further emphasized the continuity with the earlier comics, noting,
“Readers helped make ‘Resurrection’ a runaway success; they’re amply rewarded here, with a story whose roots we planted in the first book. ‘Batman ’89’ comics readers will also find that ‘Revolution’ coexists neatly with the two DC series, which are set later. All will be revealed in the super-hero novel adventure of the year!”
