Planning a Disneyland day is harder than it should be.
You have to know what is open, what is behind walls, what is gone for good, and what is coming back. Skip that homework, and you march your family across the park toward a construction scrim. Happens all the time, usually to people who booked months ago and never thought to check again.
Frontierland is one of the worst offenders. Between the riverboat, the canoes, the sailing ship, Tom Sawyer Island, and everything tucked around the edges, something is almost always rotating out. Sometimes for four days. Sometimes for four months. Disney does not always give much warning.
Which is why we track it. Two updates landed today, both in Frontierland at Disneyland Park.
One attraction finally has a reopening date. Another is about to go down.
Mark Twain Riverboat Closing September 8
The Mark Twain Riverboat temporarily closes September 8, 2026.
Per the Disneyland website, it reopens September 12, 2026, with current operating hours listed at 9 a.m. to 5:40 p.m.; these could change.
Four days total. That length usually points to routine maintenance rather than anything major. But if your park day falls in that window, adjust.
Shootin’ Exposition Back September 11
Frontierland Shootin’ Exposition reopens September 11, 2026.
It has been closed since July 6, which puts this refurbishment at just over two months. Not much visible progress during that stretch beyond themed scrims going up, so what exactly got worked on has not been obvious from the outside.
Line up the dates, and you get a strange few days. The Shootin’ Exposition returns September 11. The Mark Twain returns to service on September 12. So there is a brief early-September stretch where Frontierland is short-handed, then everything is back.
What You Get at the Shootin’ Exposition in Disneyland
Never stopped in? It is one of the more old-school things in the park, and it holds up.
You walk up to a rustic log cabin and shoulder a replica .54-caliber Hawkins buffalo rifle. Look through the scope, and you are staring at legendary Boot Hill in Tombstone, Arizona.
Nearly 100 interactive targets, moving and stationary. Hit one, and you get lights, sounds, and animations. A few of those animations have a supernatural twist, which is the detail that hooks people.
Know before you go: this costs extra. You buy credits to play, and one credit gets you roughly 25 shots. More credits, more shooting.
Safety-wise, the rifles fire no pellets or projectiles at all. They use invisible beams of safe infrared light, and a hit registers when that light strikes a sensor on the target.
No height requirement.
What Makes the Mark Twain Worth Your Time
The Mark Twain is an authentic reproduction of the vessels that once ran up and down the Mississippi. A working steam engine turns water from the Rivers of America into steam, which drives the paddle that moves the boat.
The trip is 14 minutes, half a mile, circling Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island with narration along the way.
Things to spot: the north bank of the Columbia Gorge with its waterfront and five waterfalls, a rustic frontier cabin, an idyllic Native American village, a busy beaver chewing on the train trestle, mountain lions sunning themselves, and the Disneyland Railroad steaming off into the wilderness.
The boat is 28 feet tall, 105 feet long, with four decks and detailed wood craftsmanship throughout.
Pilothouse up top holds the wheelhouse and Captain’s Quarters. Promenade Deck has a salon plus vintage photos and maps. Texas Deck, also called the Sun Deck, is where you go to be outside. The Main Deck houses the boiler and pistons that drive the paddlewheel.
Seating is limited. No height requirement.
Why It Is Called the Mark Twain
Small detail, great story.
Walt Disney named it after the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and one of Walt’s personal heroes.
Clemens piloted riverboats as a young man, and that job gave him the name. “Mark twain” is a boating term meaning the vessel sits at a safe depth.

You still have options on the Rivers of America.
The Mark Twain runs the same route as Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes and the Sailing Ship Columbia. Different experience, same path around Tom Sawyer Island.
Check schedules on both, though. Neither operates every day.

September 11: Frontierland Shootin’ Exposition returns after two months.
Trip booked in early September? That is a narrow gap where Frontierland is not at full strength, but it clears fast. Anyone visiting September 12 or later gets both.
