Okay, Pixar fans, we finally have a real answer to the question everyone has been arguing about since Incredibles 3 was announced.
The Parr family is not aging up. Not Violet. Not Dash. Not even Jack-Jack. Brad Bird said so himself, and his explanation might actually change your mind if you were on team time jump.
Wait, How Much Time Has Actually Passed?
Quick refresher for anyone catching up. The original Incredibles came out way back in 2004. Incredibles 2 didn’t arrive until 2018, but the story picked up literally seconds after the first movie ended. Now, Incredibles 3 is set for June 16, 2028, which means 24 years will have passed in the real world while basically no time passes on screen. Wild, right?
A lot of fans assumed the third movie would finally jump ahead. Grown-up Violet in college. Dash is a moody teenager. Jack-Jack old enough to actually talk. It felt like the obvious move, especially since so many of us who saw the first movie as kids are now full-blown adults with mortgages and back pain.
Brad Bird’s Explanation Actually Makes Perfect Sense
Bird shut that down completely in a new interview with The Direct, and his reasoning is actually kind of brilliant.
According to Bird, every member of the Parr family represents a stage of life, and their powers only make sense at their current ages. Jack-Jack has a million random powers because babies are total wildcards. Nobody knows what a baby will become, so he can do basically anything. Dash is pure 10-year-old energy, all sugar and speed and zero attention span. Violet is the classic insecure teenager who literally wants to be invisible and puts up force fields to keep everyone out.
The parents fit the pattern, too. Helen stretches because moms get pulled in every direction imaginable. Bob is super strong because dads are expected to carry everything and never crack.
Bird’s point is that these are family archetypes, and aging the kids up would break the whole thing. He also pushed back hard on the idea that older characters would feel cooler or more relatable, basically saying fans who think that are wrong. Bold, but when you hear the logic, it tracks.
A New Director Is Taking Over, Too
One more thing worth knowing. Bird is not directing this time. He’s writing and executive producing, while Peter Sohn, the director of Elemental, takes the reins. So we’re getting a new voice behind the camera with the original creator still steering the story. That feels like the best of both worlds.

As for what the movie is actually about? Pixar is staying quiet for now. No plot details, no villain, nothing. But with D23 coming up, the smart money says we’ll get a lot more soon. Pixar loves dropping big reveals at that event, and a franchise this huge is basically guaranteed a spotlight moment. First footage? Concept art? A story tease? Fingers crossed for all of it.
