Captain Marvel Star Brie Larson Speaks Out on Not Being Publicly Cast in ‘Doomsday’
Marvel Studios’ upcoming epic, Avengers: Doomsday (2026), is already shaping up to be one of the franchise’s biggest undertakings yet. Directed once again by Anthony and Joe Russo, the film is set to pivot away from its original Kang-centric direction, introducing Doctor Doom—played by Robert Downey Jr.—as the new central villain and major force in the MCU’s next chapter.
When Marvel unveiled its ensemble cast during the much-discussed “chair reveal” livestream in May 2025, fans were treated to an impressive roll call. The list included Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, Simu Liu’s Shang-Chi, Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, and James Marsden’s Cyclops. Longtime X-Men favorites Ian McKellen, Rebecca Romijn, Patrick Stewart, and Alan Cumming were also confirmed to reprise their Fox-era roles.
Despite the massive roster, several notable heroes were missing from the lineup. Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel were all absent, leading to ongoing speculation about their involvement. Ruffalo later joked about his exclusion on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, saying, “They decided that it was better to get rid of me than for me to tell the end of the next movie.”
Now, Larson has become the latest MCU veteran to address her rumored absence. During a recent appearance on The View, the Captain Marvel star was asked whether Carol Danvers would appear in Avengers: Doomsday. Larson simply replied, “Thank you for asking, and you know I can’t answer.”
Her short response has only amplified fan theories that Captain Marvel is being kept secret until closer to release. It echoes her earlier comment from February 2024, when she told interviewers, “I don’t have anything to say about that.” Marvel actors are famously tight-lipped when under contract, and Larson’s careful wording suggests she may be hiding a return.
Adding to the speculation, Larson posted an image on social media in June 2025 showing herself facing the words “AVENGE” and “DANVERS.” The cryptic post sparked widespread discussion, with many fans convinced it hinted at her MCU comeback.

Larson’s last appearance as Carol Danvers came in The Marvels (2023), which ended on a major cliffhanger as Monica Rambeau became trapped in another dimension. Reports indicate Monica will play a key role in Avengers: Doomsday, making Carol’s absence from the announcement all the more surprising. Given their emotional bond and the unresolved story between them, many believe Captain Marvel’s presence is a matter of when, not if.
As Avengers: Doomsday continues production, stars like Pedro Pascal and Alan Cumming have already exited filming, while Marvel remains silent on additional casting. With Doctor Doom stepping into the spotlight and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027) on the horizon, the MCU’s next era seems poised for transformation. Whether Larson’s Captain Marvel joins that journey is a mystery Marvel is clearly intent on preserving—for now.
