“Brave and Bold” Batman Reboot Confirms Mr. Freeze, Scarecrow, and More Villains

While the DC Universe grapples with the future of Batman on the big screen—delays to both The Batman Part II and the DCU’s The Brave and the Bold have left fans wondering what’s next—DC Comics is breaking new ground in Gotham City with “Absolute Batman”.

Part of the new Absolute Universe, this bold new comic series offers a completely fresh take on the Dark Knight and his world, reshaping characters, storylines, and Gotham itself.

Written by Scott Snyder, “Absolute Batman” debuted alongside “Absolute Superman” and “Absolute Wonder Woman” in late 2024, with its first issue now the best-selling comic book of 2024. Currently four issues deep, the series has captivated readers with its reimagined take on Bruce Wayne/Batman and his iconic supporting cast of characters.

Snyder’s Bruce Wayne is no billionaire playboy. Instead, this Batman is a civil engineer from humble beginnings who uses his citywide access to construction sites as a resource in his fight against crime. Gone is the Batmobile—instead, Bruce gets around in a bulldozer. His Batcave isn’t a single hidden lair; instead, it’s a series of makeshift locations scattered throughout Gotham. Even his iconic Batsuit is different, with the bat emblem on his chest doubling as an ax blade.

Snyder’s changes extend beyond Bruce Wayne himself. Alfred Pennyworth, traditionally the loyal butler, is now a mercenary hunting Batman. Meanwhile, several members of the Rogues Gallery, including Oswald Cobblepot (The Penguin), Selina Kyle (Catwoman), and Edward Nygma (The Riddler), are depicted as Bruce’s childhood friends who remain close allies. However, Roman Sionis, a.k.a. Black Mask, serves as the series’ primary antagonist.

What’s Next for “Absolute Batman”?

Snyder has big plans for the series. Responding to fan questions on Bluesky in November (via ComicBook.com), he revealed that upcoming issues would introduce Dr. Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze), Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow), and Bane.

As he more recently revealed on Owen Likes More Comics on YouTube, Freeze is set to appear in issues #7 and #8 as part of a two-issue arc titled “Absolute Zero,” while Bane’s arrival is being kept under wraps. The Joker, however, who appeared briefly in the first issue, is also expected to play a larger role in future installments.

The current storyline, dubbed “The Zoo,” spans six issues (#1-4 are available now) and has been praised for its ambitious reimagining of the world of Gotham. Snyder recently confirmed that the series is planned to continue for (at least) 10 more issues, ensuring fans will have plenty of time to explore this bold new take on the Caped Crusader.

The zoo is 6 issues (then we have a 2 issue story called absolute zero, and then another 6 issue arc and onward!)

“Absolute Batman” isn’t just a reinvention of Gotham—it’s part of a larger effort by DC Comics to rethink its most iconic heroes. Alongside “Absolute Superman” and “Absolute Wonder Woman”, the Absolute Universe represents a creative reboot that offers readers fresh perspectives on familiar characters.

With its dynamic storytelling, innovative character redesigns, and a commitment to shaking up the status quo, “Absolute Batman” is carving out a unique place in the Batman mythos.

“Absolute Batman” issues #1-4 are available now, alongside “Absolute Superman” and “Absolute Wonder Woman” issues #1-3. Whether you’re a lifelong Batman fan or new to the Dark Knight, this groundbreaking series is a must-read for anyone looking to experience Gotham in a whole new light. Or darkness.
