‘Batman’ Sequel Canceled, No Longer Moving Ahead

The Dark Knight’s influence extends far beyond the comic book page, with Batman appearing in blockbuster films, animated shows, and video games for over 80 years.

While The Batman: Part II and The Brave and the Bold promise to expand the character’s presence in theaters, the interactive side of Gotham now faces some setbacks.

After the release of Batman: Arkham Shadow on Meta Quest 3 in 2024, fans anticipated a sequel that would continue the virtual reality-based adventures of the Caped Crusader.

Unfortunately, Aftermath reports that Meta has canceled the follow-up, citing the closure of several VR studios and layoffs within Reality Labs.

Sanzaru Games, which was involved in development, was among those affected.

Despite this, there’s still cause for excitement in Batman gaming.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will launch on May 29, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a later release planned for Nintendo Switch 2.

According to LEGO.com, players will “build the legacy of the Dark Knight and protect Gotham City™” in an open-world adventure. TT Games, known for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga™, is developing the title, which promises iconic moments, signature LEGO humor, and encounters with both classic allies and notorious villains. Unlike the Arkham series, which emphasized dark, immersive narratives, the LEGO game offers a more playful yet expansive look at Gotham City.

It allows players to explore Batman’s journey from his beginnings to the legendary hero he becomes, blending story-driven gameplay with the charm of LEGO’s interactive world.

While VR fans may be disappointed by the canceled sequel, Legacy of the Dark Knight ensures that Gotham City remains a playground for both longtime fans and newcomers, continuing Batman’s presence in interactive entertainment.
