‘Back to the Future’s Marty McFly Returns in New Multiverse Adventure

There seems be a growing interest in entertainment in revisiting classic worlds without committing to continuity with traditional follow-ups such as sequels or prequels. But one universe everyone assumed would stay sealed off was Back to the Future — until now.

Fortnite’s “Chapter 7: Pacific Break” includes Marty McFly among its crossover characters, meaning the door to Back to the Future is no longer locked. Of course, despite creators Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale repeatedly stating there will never be a new film, the franchise hasn’t been completely off-limits over the years. We’ve had a video game, comic books, and even a stage play. Now, Epic Games has brought back the time-traveling teenager who only knows how to hit “88 miles per hour.” Watch the official trailer below:

“Purchase the Battle Pass and seek revenge as The Bride, rep the future as Marty McFly, and unlock Fortnite originals like Miles Cross and Cat Holloway…plus a new version of Dark Voyager!” the official description from Fortnite reads.

With Fortnite functioning like a constantly expanding metaverse, the moment raises an enticing possibility — could Back to the Future survive in a cross-dimensional world where timelines collide instead of getting rewritten? Fortnite has already folded in pop culture figures ranging from the Power Rangers to The Simpsons. A multiversal angle wouldn’t just make sense — it would play perfectly into the original trilogy’s storyline.

A new version of Back to the Future wouldn’t need to recast, either — using “de-age” technology, which has already been used in franchises such as Star Wars, Marvel, and Indiana Jones, it could preserve the actors while telling stories in alternate timelines.

Live action, animated, or fully digital, a multiversal approach would give fans something new without erasing what already exists.

“Chapter 7: Pacific Break” is the thirty-ninth season of Fortnite Battle Royale. It began on November 29 and will end on March 4.
