Avengers Shake-Up as Report Reveals New Teams for ‘Doomsday’
A seismic shift is underway in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it’s reshaping the legacy of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Once billed as the studio’s next big crossover, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty has been abandoned following Jonathan Majors’ conviction and exit from Marvel. The story arc built around Kang the Conqueror is gone, and Avengers: Doomsday (2026) is now taking its place as the franchise’s new focal point.
The biggest surprise? Robert Downey Jr. is back—but not as Tony Stark. Instead, he’ll embody Victor Von Doom, a move that redefines his role in the MCU and brings Marvel’s most iconic villain into play with an unexpected twist.

Marvel is also calling in familiar leadership. Joe and Anthony Russo, who previously delivered Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), will return to direct Doomsday. Their return suggests the studio is once again aiming for large-scale emotional spectacle and universe-spanning storytelling.
Release plans have shifted, too. Avengers: Doomsday will arrive on December 18, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars has been moved to December 17, 2027—both pushed roughly seven months later than originally intended.
Insiders describe the delays as part of a broader commitment to quality, with the Doomsday script still in active development. The studio is embracing the extra time to fine-tune its biggest crossover in years.
Marvel isn’t dialing back its ambition, though. Characters from the Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Thunderbolts will appear, setting up what could be the MCU’s most expansive ensemble ever. If Endgame was the conclusion of an era, Doomsday is being positioned as the foundation for the franchise’s next evolution.
That trajectory mirrors Disney’s corporate strategy. As Variety reported: “The notable decrease in theatrical Marvel features on the immediate horizon aligns with Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recently articulated strategy for the company’s superhero features.”
Iger explained during an investor call: “Marvel Studios had ‘lost a little focus by making too much’ between its tentpoles and various Disney+ series. He continued, ‘By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality.'”
Iger’s emphasis on selectivity has been a constant since his return in 2022, and Marvel’s restructuring underscores that philosophy. Alongside the Avengers rescheduling, three additional dates—February 13, 2026, November 6, 2026, and November 5, 2027—shifted from “Untitled Marvel” to “Untitled Disney,” leaving Marvel with fewer theatrical slots to avoid oversaturation.
Financially, Doomsday could benefit from its Christmas debut, arriving right after Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026). If Spidey performs strongly, Doomsday may capitalize on that momentum in the holiday corridor.
The roster confirms the crossover’s scope. Longtime cast members will return alongside new additions, raising questions about how the Russo Brothers will balance such an ensemble. Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus hinted on X that the film might rival Infinity War’s structure:
“Fate of the entire multiverse hangs in the balance and two of the main teams have tension with each other because the leaders are still trying to sort out the “mantle” debacle. And then add the OG to the mix. Bruh…”

Fans interpreted this as Sam Wilson’s Avengers clashing with The New Avengers (introduced in Thunderbolts*’ 2025 post-credits scene), while the original Avengers also rejoin the fight. If true, Doomsday could surpass Infinity War in sheer team count.
Another fan, ricardo (@ricardozarate), responded: “And guys wdym with “elaborate”? It’s clearly “Avengers” v “The New Avengers” v “the OG Avengers” (v “X-Men”)”

Although Marvel has yet to confirm the plot, Doomsday appears set to reshape the definition of the Avengers team 14 years after the original lineup debuted.
As Just Majesty (@thanksbutton) put it: “Essentially, it’s Infinity War but bigger.”
