Authorities Respond After Man Found Dead at Dollywood-Style Venue

This is not the kind of story we enjoy writing. But it happened, it happened at a venue that a lot of people reading this site have visited or are planning to visit, and you deserve to know about it.

Saturday evening in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, a man was fatally shot in the parking lot of Dolly Parton’s Stampede. According to the Pigeon Forge Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call at approximately 7:35 PM reporting a gunshot at the venue. When they arrived, they found two men inside a vehicle. One of the men told officers he had a handgun when it discharged, striking the other man. The victim was taken to LeConte Medical Center and was pronounced dead.

No names have been released. The investigation is ongoing. The Stampede has not issued a public statement.

The circumstances as police have described them point to an accidental discharge inside a vehicle rather than an intentional act of violence directed at the venue or other guests. That context matters. It does not make a man’s death less serious, but it does mean this is a different kind of incident than a targeted attack on a public attraction. Families who are planning to visit the Stampede deserve to understand what actually happened rather than working from a headline alone.

Dolly Parton’s Stampede is not a minor venue. It is one of the most visited dinner show attractions in the country, located at 3849 Parkway in Pigeon Forge, just minutes from Dollywood. The show features 32 horses, equestrian stunts, acrobatics, and a 12.5 million LED video wall, all paired with a four-course meal that includes creamy vegetable soup, homemade biscuits, whole rotisserie chicken, pork loin, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and dessert. Guests are encouraged to arrive 45 to 60 minutes early for the pre-show Horse Walk. It is a high-energy, family-focused experience that draws visitors from across the country, and it sits right in the heart of a tourism corridor that sees enormous family foot traffic every weekend.

A fatal shooting in that parking lot on a Saturday night during peak season is significant news for anyone planning a Smoky Mountain trip.

What Is Going On at Dollywood Right Now

Because a lot of the people reading this came here for Dollywood news specifically, we want to make clear that Dollywood is a completely separate operation from the Stampede and is not involved in Saturday’s incident in any way. The two are different venues that happen to be near each other on the Pigeon Forge Parkway.

Dollywood is dealing with its own news this week, none of which involves anything like what happened at the Stampede. On April 18, overnight storms uprooted a tree near Eagle Mountain Sanctuary, the park’s outdoor aviary that houses rescued bald eagles in partnership with the American Eagle Foundation. The aviary was compromised, the eagles were moved to the Foundation’s own facilities for safekeeping, and the surrounding park areas were closed. Wings of America shows have been canceled since Sunday, April 19, and as of Monday, April 20, the closure continues.

Dollywood posted on Instagram Monday morning: “All Wings of America shows for today (Monday, April 20) have been canceled as repair work continues at the Eagle Mountain Sanctuary.”

The park’s official statement from Sunday reads: “Due to storms overnight, a tree near Eagle Mountain Sanctuary was uprooted, causing the aviary to be compromised. Staff from the American Eagle Foundation will remove the eagles from the aviary and will house them at their facilities until the netting can be repaired. The area of the park near the aviary will be closed, and all Wings of America shows for today (Sunday, April 19) have been canceled as necessary work is completed.”

No timeline has been given for when the aviary repairs will be complete or when the eagles will return. Everything else at Dollywood is fully operational. The Flower and Food Festival is running through June 7 with seasonal food offerings, floral installations, and the Umbrella Sky. NightFlight Expedition, the new attraction in Wildwood Grove that Dollywood is calling the world’s first indoor family hybrid coaster and whitewater river raft ride, is expected to open sometime this spring.

What This Means If Pigeon Forge Is on Your Travel List

For guests who have Dolly Parton’s Stampede on their itinerary, the practical recommendation right now is to watch for an official statement from the venue before your visit and stay current on the local Pigeon Forge news coverage as the investigation develops. The circumstances described so far suggest this was not a security threat to other guests, but families making travel decisions deserve current and complete information rather than assumptions.

For guests whose trip is centered on Dollywood, the park is in good shape despite the aviary closure. The Wings of America situation is unfortunate and has no confirmed resolution timeline, but the rest of Dollywood is running normally and the Flower and Food Festival is genuinely one of the best times of year to be there. The seasonal outdoor kitchen booths, the floral displays, and the overall spring atmosphere at the park make for a compelling visit even with one attraction area temporarily offline.

For anyone combining both the Stampede and Dollywood in the same trip, which is a very common Pigeon Forge itinerary, keep both situations in mind as you finalize plans. The Stampede incident is developing and the aviary situation at Dollywood has no announced end date. Checking both before you travel is just good planning.

Pigeon Forge is a special place, and we say that genuinely. It is one of the warmest, most family-oriented tourism destinations in the country and Dollywood in particular is the kind of park that makes you remember why you love theme parks in the first place. Saturday’s tragedy does not change that. It is a serious incident that deserves honest coverage and appropriate context, and that is what we have tried to give it here.

Check Dollywood’s Instagram for real-time updates on Eagle Mountain Sanctuary and follow local Pigeon Forge news for developments in the Stampede investigation. If you have questions about whether your planned visit to either venue makes sense given current conditions, those two sources together will give you the most complete picture. We will update our Pigeon Forge coverage as both situations develop.
