Disney World Erases More Historic Elements From Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom

The quiet dismantling of Tomorrowland’s 1994 identity at Magic Kingdom Park reached its conclusion this week, with the final rocket-shaped tower coming down and leaving the land’s entrance looking unlike anything Walt Disney World Resort guests have seen in over three decades.

On June 22, WDWNT reported that the third and largest of the three towers that had stood at the hub-side entrance to Tomorrowland since 1994 had been fully removed.

The outlet shared a photo of the site near Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe, where a green tarp and scattered construction equipment now occupy the ground where the rusted metal structure stood just days ago. At the location of one of the two smaller towers removed earlier in June, the cleanup is already further along — the tarp and debris have been cleared, leaving a noticeably open stretch of the Tomorrowland entrance corridor.

The removals unfolded in sequence over the past several weeks. The first two towers came down in early June, with the third following shortly after. Crews removed its roof before covering the remaining structure with a tan fabric scrim — the same staging pattern used for the previous two towers before they were taken down entirely.

Three Towers, All From 1994

The structures that have now been wiped from the Magic Kingdom landscape weren’t original to the park’s 1971 opening. All three towers were part of a Tomorrowland overhaul completed in 1994 — the same update that also introduced the rock formations framing the land’s entrance from the Cinderella Castle hub.

Those rocks have been receiving their own quiet refresh, with Walt Disney World Resort gradually repainting them over the past several years. The project recently reached completion, with crews finishing the rocks at the Tomorrowland entrance after the Cinderella Castle moat was drained during a separate repainting effort.

Thirty-two years after they were installed, all three towers and the original rock color scheme from the 1994 update have now been removed or replaced.

Walt Disney World Resort hasn’t said a word publicly about the tower removals or whether the cleared sites will receive anything new. Whether the open spaces will be filled with updated decorative elements as part of a broader Tomorrowland evolution — or simply left as they are — remains an open question.
