All Batman Projects: Canceled and Upcoming

Batman’s next few years remain packed with major releases across games, animation, and live-action films. However, it turns out some projects never made it to release.

TT Games is developing LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, an open-world action-adventure game featuring multiple versions of the character from across his history. The title launches on May 29 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch 2 release planned later. Check out the official trailer below:

Animation is also expanding the character’s legacy. A Batman: Knightfall animated film series based on the comic storyline is expected to debut this year. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves is continuing his standalone cinematic universe with The Batman — Part II, scheduled to arrive on October 1, 2027, with Robert Pattinson returning as Bruce Wayne.

DC Studios is also developing The Brave and the Bold, which will introduce a new Batman within the studio’s shared DC Universe.

But while those projects continue moving forward, several Batman productions never reached completion.

Batman TV Plans That Were Abandoned

One of the most notable canceled projects was a planned spinoff connected to Reeves’ The Batman universe. Originally developed as a Gotham City Police Department series, the project later shifted toward Arkham Asylum.

Last year, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn told BobaTalks (via IGN) that the show was no longer in development, though elements of its concept were reportedly folded into HBO’s The Penguin.

Canceled Batman Games From Multiple Eras

Batman’s video game history includes several ambitious titles that never launched.

A tie-in game connected to Nolan’s The Dark Knight was once planned as an open-world companion to the 2008 film. The project was canceled shortly before release, and its developer, Pandemic Studios Brisbane, later shut down. Storyboard art for the game recently surfaced on Reddit (via Vice).

Another Nolan-era game, believed to have used the working title Project Apollo, was developed by Monolith Productions before being canceled after approximately 18 months. Reports claim the project ended when Christopher Nolan declined to approve a game adaptation tied to his films. Recently, footage from the game was recovered from archived files from 2009–2010 by archivist MrTalida and uploaded to the Internet Archive.

More recently, plans for a sequel to Batman: Arkham Shadow were also halted. The 2024 VR title launched on Meta Quest 3 and received strong critical reception, but its follow-up was scrapped following layoffs and restructuring within Meta’s Reality Labs division, according to a report from Aftermath.

Despite these projects being halted, Batman continues to remain one of DC’s most consistently developed characters, with multiple high-profile projects still shaping the Dark Knight’s future across entertainment.
