After Operation Update, Disney World Now Faces Double Closure
Exciting updates are making waves at Walt Disney World Resort, but they come with a gentle reminder for guests planning their visits.
For the first time since 2019, both Disney’s Blizzard Beach and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon will be open simultaneously this summer. Disney Parks Blog confirmed, “From May 21 through September 7, Disney World guests can enjoy the tropical shipwreck oasis of Typhoon Lagoon and the frosty fun of Blizzard Beach water park.” This marks a major milestone, as pandemic-related operational shifts had previously kept only one water park open at a time.
The timing of this announcement is no coincidence. May 21 falls just one day before Universal Orlando Resort is set to debut its highly anticipated third gate, Universal Epic Universe. With both Disney water parks welcoming guests at the same time, visitors can look forward to more choices for cooling off during Florida’s hottest months.
However, while this news is a win for water park enthusiasts, it also means the likelihood of weather-related closures doubling—something that was increasingly evident during the colder months of late 2024 and early 2025, when Blizzard Beach saw multiple temporary shutdowns due to frequent cold fronts.
As the summer season approaches, so does the much-anticipated reopening of Typhoon Lagoon. After a lengthy hiatus, the tropical paradise will officially welcome guests once again on May 1. However, before the switch takes place, Blizzard Beach has one last celebration planned. In honor of its 30th anniversary, the winter-themed water park will host a series of limited-time festivities starting April 1.
“Just imagine a high-energy DJ spinning some toe-tapping tunes on the deck near the Polar Pub,” Disney Parks Blog shared. “And fun interactions with Mickey and Minnie decked out in their winter attire. There’s even going to be snowman bowling and character-themed tubes for floating down Cross Country Creek.” The celebration will be short-lived, as Blizzard Beach will close for refurbishment at the end of the month, making way for Typhoon Lagoon’s long-awaited return.
Adding even more excitement to the water park season, Disney Water Parks’ Instagram account revealed the comeback of a fan-favorite nighttime event. “Let’s glow! Disney H2O Glow After Hours is returning with fun for the whole family on select nights this summer,” the post shared.
Running from May 23 through September 13, this separately ticketed event will bring three hours of exclusive after-dark fun at Typhoon Lagoon, featuring complimentary treats, DJ dance parties, and rare character meet-and-greets. Guests will also enjoy lower wait times for signature attractions like Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool and Castaway Creek.
Meanwhile, Disney’s theme parks continue to evolve, with major transformation projects underway. Disney’s Hollywood Studios is set to bring Monstropolis to life with the closure of Grand Avenue, while Magic Kingdom is preparing to introduce a land inspired by Disney Villains and a new area dedicated to Cars. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, guests can look forward to the arrival of experiences inspired by Encanto and Indiana Jones.
Even as changes take shape, there’s still plenty to enjoy throughout the resort. From the thrills of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at EPCOT to the upcoming debut of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure at Magic Kingdom, the magic never stops at Disney World.
As the summer heats up, guests should keep in mind the unpredictable nature of Florida’s weather, especially with hurricane season approaching. With both water parks open, weather-related closures could lead to an increased number of displaced visitors seeking entertainment elsewhere in the resort.
Whether Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon should remain open year-round is up for debate, but for now, guests can look forward to a summer filled with splashing adventures.
