Monsters Unchained Takes a Short Break

According to Universal’s official website, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment will be closed December 11 through December 15, 2026. Universal hasn’t said why.

That’s a notable gap for anyone visiting that week. Monsters Unchained has been the main event in Dark Universe since Epic Universe opened in May 2025. It takes guests inside Frankenstein Manor as Dr. Victoria Frankenstein tries to bend Universal’s legendary monsters to her will.

The good news is that Darkmoor still has plenty to keep you busy. Curse of the Werewolf, a family-friendly spinning coaster, will be running. You can also stop by the Darkmoor Monster Makeup Experience, grab a bite at Das Stakehaus, or settle in at the Burning Blade Tavern.

Two Fyre Drill Closures to Note

Anyone heading to How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk should plan around Fyre Drill, which closes November 9 through November 10, 2026. It will be offline again for a longer stretch from January 25 through February 4, 2027. We always recommend checking Universal’s official closures page before you go, since schedules can change.

A New Coaster Is On the Way

Now for the exciting part. Universal has confirmed that a brand-new indoor coaster is coming to Dark Universe, and it will sit right alongside Monsters Unchained. We don’t know the theme, the ride system, or the opening date just yet. Universal’s official X account kept things brief, sharing that “Construction is underway, with an opening planned in the years ahead.”

New aerial photos give a better sense of how far along things are. Bioreconstruct, an account that keeps close tabs on Central Florida theme park projects, shared images of the site on November 6.

Two of the photos show work tied to access for the coaster. Bioreconstruct explained that sand from nearby digging is being kept on site temporarily. A trailer area set up before the park opened seems to be staying as an expansion pad.

Another photo shows the far end of the show building, where the account says concrete was recently poured for the foundations of an exterior wall. Prep work for an attraction foundation is happening nearby, and another part of the ride area is beginning to come together. You can spot construction equipment and freshly cleared land just behind Frankenstein Manor’s gothic rooftops.

Keep in mind these are unofficial observations, and Universal hasn’t commented on the coaster’s scale or layout.

Why This Matters for Your Visit

More rides mean more ways to spread out crowds, and Epic Universe could use that. Comcast reported $2.6 billion in third-quarter 2026 revenue from Universal’s theme parks, a 4.4% drop from the year before. CFO Jason Armstrong said demand cooled over the summer. Co-CEO Mike Cavanagh admitted that competitors like Disney “were quicker to anticipate and recognize softness in demand” and made changes. He also mentioned “capacity challenges” at Epic Universe, which a second big coaster in Dark Universe should help with.

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his… More »
