The way guests access EPCOT‘s most recognizable landmark changed on Thursday without warning. Walt Disney World Resort shut the front doors to Spaceship Earth and sent riders around the side, leaving visitors to figure out the new route on the spot.
What EPCOT Guests Found on October 22

EPCOT guests who walked into the World Celebration neighborhood on Thursday morning found both the standby and Lightning Lane queue entrances closed. Stanchions blocked the main doors, and signs and cast members pointed people toward a different entrance along the side of the building, near Project Tomorrow, the interactive space at the ride’s exit.

At that temporary entrance, a cast member checked Lightning Lane access with a portable scanning device. Disney didn’t announce the change in advance and hasn’t explained why the main entrance was closed.
Not the Only Change in the Works

This detour is minor compared with what’s planned for the attraction. At D23 Expo 2026, Walt Disney World Resort revealed that it will reimagine the inside of Spaceship Earth, centering the new version on human connection. The innovation-focused dark ride was first scheduled for an overhaul in 2019, but COVID-19 delays shelved the project indefinitely.
Disney hasn’t said when the ride will close for the work, and it has offered few details about the new storyline. Whether Dame Judi Dench, the current narrator, will return for the updated version is also unknown. Nothing confirms that Thursday’s entrance closure is tied to the overhaul.
Planning Your Visit

The ride appears to be operating through the side entrance for now. Guests heading to Spaceship Earth should look for the posted signs near the main doors and follow cast member instructions, particularly those using Lightning Lane. Because Disney hasn’t explained the closure, the temporary setup could change or end at any time.
