If you spent the October 1 morning at Magic Kingdom, you were in for more than a typical park day. The park turned 55 today, and Walt Disney World planned a special morning moment to mark it, along with new anniversary merchandise you’ll want to look for.

Walt Disney World President Joe Schott spoke from the Cinderella Castle stage at 8:50 a.m. His remarks celebrated 55 years of guest memories and a look back at the past.
Because 8:50 a.m. came just ahead of the park’s usual opening, the best chance of seeing the address was to take advantage of Early Theme Park Entry and head straight to Main Street, U.S.A. The new commemorative merchandise also has a sweet twist. The collection’s models are two cast members who were working at Magic Kingdom when it first opened.
Disney has always said cast members are the heart of the experience, and few can speak to the park’s history quite like the people who were there on day one. If you’re hoping to bring something home, shop sooner rather than later, as milestone-date releases often disappear quickly.
Guests who haven’t visited in a while may be surprised by how different the western side of the park looks. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed permanently in July 2025. That area is becoming Piston Peak National Park, a Cars land that trades the desert scenery of Disneyland Resort’s Cars Land for a rugged national park feel.

For now, construction walls cover much of the old waterway, and some walkways around Frontierland and Liberty Square have shifted. This is also the first major anniversary without the Rivers of America, which dates back to opening day.
Nearby, you’ll find several recent updates: Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which replaced Splash Mountain in 2024; Country Bear Musical Jamboree, the reimagined Country Bear Jamboree that debuted the same year; and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, back this year after an extended refurbishment.

Magic Kingdom welcomed its first guests on October 1, 1971, as the original park at Walt Disney World Resort. Walt Disney passed away in 1966 before the Florida Project was complete, so his brother, Roy O. Disney, saw it through and formally dedicated the park later that month.
Opening-season favorites like Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, “it’s a small world,” and The Hall of Presidents are still around, joined over the years by Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and TRON Lightcycle / Run.
The 50th anniversary, “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” began on October 1, 2021, and lasted 18 months with EARidescent castle décor, new nighttime shows, and plenty of merchandise. The 55th is quieter, but with so much construction underway, it’s a fascinating moment to visit.
