Disney World Reverses Controversial Stitch Removal, Major Comeback Confirmed
Walt Disney World guests may notice a familiar face has finally returned.
For months, one recognizable piece of the resort was nowhere to be found. Its disappearance raised questions about whether Disney planned to restore it or whether guests had seen it for the last time.
Now, the wait is over.
Stitch has made his comeback, restoring something longtime visitors have come to associate with Walt Disney World.
But for fans of Experiment 626, seeing him return may also reopen a much bigger conversation about what Disney could do with the character next.
The Wait Is Finally Over
Stitch has returned to the exterior of World of Disney at Disney Springs.
The large figure is once again sitting above the “World of Disney” signage, his arms outstretched. Disney removed Stitch earlier this summer, leaving the familiar space empty.
His disappearance didn’t mean he had left Walt Disney World completely.
During his time away, Stitch appeared backstage near Walt Disney World’s North Marina. Disney is currently working on a new Magic Kingdom ferryboat in that area.
The figure now appears noticeably cleaner following his return, suggesting his backstage stay may have allowed Disney to refresh him before putting him back in place.
His return restores a small but meaningful piece of Disney Springs.
Still, there’s another Stitch comeback that would mean considerably more to longtime fans.
Fans Lost Something Much Bigger Years Ago
There was a time when Stitch had his own permanent Magic Kingdom attraction.
Stitch’s Great Escape opened in Tomorrowland in 2004, taking over the space previously occupied by ExtraTERRORestrial Alien Encounter.
The attraction wasn’t a traditional dark ride. Instead, guests entered a theater and sat beneath shoulder restraints while Stitch escaped and wreaked havoc throughout the room.
Darkness, sounds, physical effects, and a Stitch Audio-Animatronic helped create the illusion that Experiment 626 was loose.
Eventually, Disney moved Stitch’s Great Escape to seasonal operation. The attraction later closed and never returned as a regular Magic Kingdom experience.
That closure left one of Disney’s most recognizable characters without a permanent ride at Walt Disney World.
Years later, Stitch hasn’t exactly faded into the background.
Experiment 626 Keeps Finding New Fans
Stitch has remained a major part of Disney culture long after his Magic Kingdom attraction disappeared.
The original Lilo & Stitch (2002) introduced audiences to Experiment 626 more than two decades ago. Disney then returned to the franchise with the live-action Lilo & Stitch (2025), bringing Lilo and Stitch to another generation.
The character also remains a major merchandise presence around Walt Disney World. Guests can find Stitch on shirts, plush toys, accessories, and plenty of other products.
That creates an interesting situation.
Parents who watched Lilo & Stitch (2002) as children can now experience the franchise with their own kids. Yet Walt Disney World doesn’t currently offer a permanent ride built around Stitch.
Disney hasn’t announced plans to change that. Still, if the company ever decided to bring Stitch back in a bigger way, it wouldn’t be short on possibilities.
Disney Could Go in Several Directions
A future Stitch attraction wouldn’t necessarily need to copy Stitch’s Great Escape.
Disney could take the original idea and completely modernize it. Guests could once again enter a facility where Experiment 626 breaks loose, but updated Audio-Animatronics and effects could transform the experience.
Lighting, projections, sound, and physical sets could create a very different version of Stitch’s chaotic escape than Disney could have built in 2004.
Another option would move away from the theater concept entirely.
Disney could create a traditional dark ride centered on Lilo and Stitch. An experience in the spirit of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway could send guests on an adventure that quickly gets out of control.
Hawaii-inspired locations could provide the setting while Lilo, Nani, Jumba, Pleakley, and other familiar characters appear throughout the experience.
Disney could combine Audio-Animatronics, projections, and physical sets to create an experience aimed at the entire family.
Of course, none of these ideas represent announced Disney projects. They’re simply possibilities for a character who continues to attract attention decades after his debut.
One Comeback Could Leave Fans Wanting Another
For the moment, Stitch fans can enjoy the return that’s actually happened.
The familiar blue alien is once again overlooking World of Disney after spending part of the summer away from his longtime spot.
His return puts a beloved piece of Disney Springs back where guests remember it.
At the same time, it serves as another reminder that Experiment 626 no longer has a permanent attraction of his own at Walt Disney World.
The character continues appearing on merchandise. Fans continue embracing him. And Lilo & Stitch has found another generation of viewers.
Disney hasn’t announced anything bigger for Stitch.
But after seeing one familiar piece of the character’s Walt Disney World history return, fans may find themselves hoping that another comeback will eventually follow.
