Disney World Alert: Massive Wave of Closures Strips 67% of Animal Kingdom Lineup
Disney’s Animal Kingdom may be the Walt Disney World park where a good plan can unravel the fastest.
Guests already have a smaller collection of traditional rides than they would find elsewhere around the resort. An entire former land is also unavailable as Disney pushes ahead with a massive project for 2027.
That leaves very little margin when another complication enters the picture.
In the right conditions, four of Animal Kingdom’s six traditional rides can become unavailable. Suddenly, guests who arrived with a packed schedule could find roughly 67% of the park’s ride lineup temporarily off the table.
Animal Kingdom Has Less Room for Closures
The numbers explain why Animal Kingdom can take such a significant hit.
Following the closures of DINOSAUR and TriceraTop Spin, the park currently has six traditional rides: Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, Kali River Rapids, Kilimanjaro Safaris, Wildlife Express Train, Avatar Flight of Passage, and Na’vi River Journey.
Four rely heavily on outdoor operations.
When stormy conditions disrupt those experiences, Animal Kingdom lacks the same deep bench of indoor rides that guests can find at Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, or Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Those parks offer numerous attractions that can continue operating through many periods of bad weather.
Animal Kingdom still has shows, restaurants, animal trails, shops, and character experiences. However, guests who built their day around rides can face a much bigger adjustment.
These Four Rides Can Become Unavailable
Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain is one of the most significant attractions that can be affected. The outdoor roller coaster remains one of Animal Kingdom’s major thrill experiences.
Kali River Rapids can also suspend operations during inclement weather.
Kilimanjaro Safaris adds another major experience to the list, while the Wildlife Express Train can also become unavailable.
If all four suspend operations, guests are left with two traditional rides that can generally continue operating: Avatar Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey.
Both are indoor attractions located in Pandora – The World of Avatar.
That can draw even more attention to Pandora when outdoor operations are disrupted. Guests looking for rides may naturally turn toward the two remaining options, while others head for shows, restaurants, shops, and covered experiences.
Right now, however, another major change makes that situation even more noticeable.
Animal Kingdom Is Already Missing an Entire Area
Disney is transforming the former DinoLand U.S.A. area into Tropical Americas, leaving a large portion of Animal Kingdom unavailable during construction.
The 11-acre land is scheduled to open in 2027 with major new experiences inspired by Encanto (2021) and Indiana Jones.
Eventually, those additions will give Animal Kingdom more to offer guests.
For now, visitors have to navigate the construction period.
DINOSAUR and TriceraTop Spin are gone, and guests can no longer use the former DinoLand area as Disney prepares its replacement.
That matters when outdoor rides become unavailable. With fewer places available for guests to spread out, more visitors may turn toward Pandora, indoor entertainment, restaurants, shops, animal experiences, and other operating areas.
Losing Rides Hits Differently at Disney Prices
There is also the financial side of a Walt Disney World vacation.
Families may spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on theme park admission, hotels, food, merchandise, transportation, and Lightning Lane access.
That can make temporarily losing most of Animal Kingdom’s ride lineup particularly frustrating.
Fortunately, rides are not the only reason to visit.
Festival of the Lion King, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, Zootopia: Better Zoogether!, animal trails, and character experiences provide alternatives when outdoor rides are unavailable.
Still, those experiences may not replace the plans of someone who arrived hoping to ride Expedition Everest or take a Kilimanjaro Safaris ride.
Unlike the other Walt Disney World theme parks, Animal Kingdom currently has fewer indoor rides available as backups.
Planning Ahead Matters More Right Now
Animal Kingdom is heading toward a major new chapter when Tropical Americas opens in 2027.
Until then, guests are visiting during a complicated transition period.
One strategy is to prioritize Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, Kali River Rapids, Kilimanjaro Safaris, and the Wildlife Express Train while conditions allow. Guests can then save indoor experiences for later.
Checking the My Disney Experience app throughout the day can also help visitors keep up with changing attraction statuses.
Animal Kingdom still offers plenty beyond traditional rides, but its current lineup leaves little room for disruptions.
