This morning did not go according to plan for some Universal Islands of Adventure guests.
One of the park’s biggest attractions failed to welcome riders as the September 16 operating day got underway. Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure was unavailable, quickly raising questions about how long guests might be without the popular coaster.
A temporary delay normally would not cause much alarm. Theme park attractions experience downtime, and complicated rides can take longer than expected to begin operating.
But Islands of Adventure is currently dealing with another notable closure that has already stretched across several weeks.
That makes the timing of Hagrid’s latest problem difficult to overlook.
A Headliner Many Guests Build Their Morning Around
Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure has been a major part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade since opening in 2019.
The coaster sends guests aboard motorcycles and sidecars for a fast trip through the Forbidden Forest. Instead of leaning heavily on screens, the experience mixes physical sets and magical creatures with several unusual coaster elements.
Riders encounter Fluffy, Cornish Pixies, and a Blast-Ended Skrewt along the way. Multiple launches add speed throughout the attraction, while a backward section and surprise drop give first-time riders a few unexpected moments.
That combination has helped Hagrid’s become one of Universal Orlando Resort’s most popular attractions.
It can also mean long waits. For guests hoping to avoid spending a large portion of their day in line, getting to Hagrid’s early can be important.
On Wednesday, that strategy ran into trouble.
The Status Changed as Guests Watched
A Universal fan posted on Reddit Wednesday morning after discovering Hagrid’s was unavailable.
According to the report, the Universal Orlando Resort app initially showed the attraction as “closed today.”
That message later changed to “delayed.”
While the difference comes down to only a couple of words, it can completely change what guests expect. A “closed today” notice suggests an attraction will remain unavailable throughout the operating day. A delay leaves the door open for operations to begin later.
Independent wait-time tracking also listed Hagrid’s as closed on Wednesday morning.
For guests already waiting to ride, however, the immediate result remained the same: Hagrid’s wasn’t running.
Early Park Admission Came and Went
The timing made the situation especially frustrating for guests eligible for Early Park Admission.
That period began at 8 a.m. at Islands of Adventure on September 16. Depending on the day’s operating schedule, eligible guests can use the extra time to experience select attractions before regular park crowds arrive.
Hagrid’s remained delayed later in the morning.
Anyone who arrived early with plans centered around the coaster therefore lost an important opportunity to get ahead of the larger crowds.
There is no reason yet to assume that means Hagrid’s will remain unavailable for an extended period. Delayed openings happen, and the attraction has experienced downtime before.
Still, another situation elsewhere at Islands of Adventure gives guests a reason to pay closer attention.
A Nearby Ride Has Already Been Gone for Weeks
Skull Island: Reign of Kong has remained unavailable since late August.
Universal eventually confirmed that the giant King Kong animatronic “sustained damage” during routine maintenance. The figure is undergoing repairs, but Universal has not provided a reopening date for the attraction.
That has kept Reign of Kong offline for weeks.
Guests initially faced an unexplained closure. Now they know the attraction needs repairs, though they still don’t know when it will reopen.
With that situation still unfolding, another Islands of Adventure headliner suddenly disappearing from the operating lineup was always going to generate attention.
Wednesday Could Still Bring Better News
There is currently no indication that the problems affecting Hagrid’s and Reign of Kong are connected or even remotely similar.
Universal has not announced an extended closure for Hagrid’s. More importantly, the attraction’s status changing from “closed today” to “delayed” means a September 16 reopening remains possible.
Guests will have to watch the Universal Orlando Resort app for the next update.
If the coaster does not return today, its status over the following days will become increasingly important. For now, though, Hagrid’s is dealing with a delayed opening, not a confirmed long-term shutdown.
That should offer at least some encouragement to guests.
Islands of Adventure already has Reign of Kong unavailable, with no reopening date. The hope now is that Hagrid’s absence will prove much shorter, and riders will soon be heading back into the Forbidden Forest.
