Halloween Horror Nights is underway at Universal Orlando Resort, but one attraction that seems almost perfectly suited for the event remains unavailable.
Universal Orlando’s Horror Make-Up Show has been closed at Universal Studios Florida since May 12, 2026. Its previous version held its final performance one day earlier, ending the latest chapter for an attraction that had entertained guests since the park opened in 1990.
Universal didn’t permanently retire the show. Instead, the company announced plans to reimagine it and bring an updated experience to the theater later in 2026.
Four months later, guests are still waiting.
Universal’s Opening-Day Show Remains Dark
The Horror Make-Up Show was one of the increasingly rare experiences at Universal Studios Florida that could trace its history directly back to opening day.
While the production changed over the decades, its basic appeal remained familiar. Live performers mixed comedy with demonstrations of horror movie makeup and special effects, giving guests something very different from Universal’s rides.
Universal closed the attraction in May to begin a major reimagining.
The company previously revealed that the updated production will feature both classic and modern horror properties while maintaining the comedy and irreverent style associated with the original experience.
However, Universal hasn’t announced an exact reopening date.
The current refurbishment calendar lists the Horror Make-Up Show as closed through winter 2026, meaning its return could still be months away.
Halloween Horror Nights Didn’t Bring an Early Return
There was reason to wonder if Universal might try to have the theater ready for Halloween Horror Nights 35.
After all, few attractions at Universal Studios Florida have a stronger natural connection to horror.
Halloween Horror Nights began August 28, but the show remained closed when the event started. Now, we’re approaching the middle of September without a reopening announcement.
Guests have noticed at least one change outside the theater. The marquee now welcomes visitors to HHN 35, giving the closed attraction a seasonal presence during the event.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t tell us what’s happening behind the doors.
Universal hasn’t confirmed that the revamped show will debut during Halloween Horror Nights, and guests shouldn’t expect it to be available unless the company announces otherwise.
The Horror Make-Up Show Isn’t Gone for Good
For longtime Universal fans, the biggest positive is that this isn’t supposed to become another permanent closure.
Universal Studios Florida has already lost several major attractions in recent years, including Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit and Fast & Furious – Supercharged.
The Horror Make-Up Show is taking a different path.
Universal is investing in a new version rather than simply removing the attraction entirely. Exactly what that version looks like remains one of the biggest unanswered questions.
For now, the curtain remains down on one of Universal Studios Florida’s oldest attractions.
But if Universal sticks to its announced schedule, the Horror Make-Up Show should finally begin its next chapter before 2026 comes to an end.
